how long to brake pads last on TJ?

While my '06 TJ was in for its 12,000 mile service this weekend, they checked the brakes and reported the front brakes are down to 60%. This seems like a lot of wear in 12,000 miles, for a 6-speed with mostly highway miles.

I may be mistaken but I seem to recall being closer to 40-50K before needing to do any brake work on my '98 XJ.

How long have you all found the pads to last on your TJ's?

It all subjective. Everyone drives differently and each will get differnt life from perishable parts based on driving habits, vehicle weight and operating conditions.
Brakes, clutch, tires. How long will they last? It's like asking how long a sixpack will last.

I'm at 50K and still on the original brakes.... and I don't drive like a grandma, either.

Is that why they call them "stealerships"?:laugh:

Brake where is subjective, auto or stick? do you downshift? DO YOU TAILGATE? (if you do you're constantly on the brake). I've gotten almost 90k out of brakes, have 15k on mine now and brakes still have a lot of life left.

Hey, thanks for all the replies everyone. The numbers most of you quoted are about what I recall getting in the XJ.

I'll wait a while longer and then go to a Midas, where I normally have my brake work done, and have them inspected there.

I certainly expect them to last a while longer. I drive the Jeep very conservatively. I don't tailgate, I do downshift, and most of my mileage is highway driving.

60% sounds bad if you really do go easy on the brakes. Besides downshifting and all the other stuff you listed, lets not forget that when others brake I normally only have to release the gas because of its super aero-dynamic body design (sarcasm).

I would definately take it somewhere else and see what they say. Could there be a possiblity that the rotors are causing the pads to wear down like that?

60% worn or at 60%

I had a problem with my YJ (when it was new) with premature pad wear. It got covered under warrenty at 15000 miles. Yep, you heard right, 15k miles and it was covered.

Normally they are not covered at any time, but if the caliper or wheel cylinder is found to be faulty and causes the premature wear then it may be covered. Document this trip to the dealer. Ask for thier diagnosis and recomendation in writing. You may be able to use that later.

I had around 37k miles when I pulled my front brakes, and found that I could have gone a few thousand more pretty easily. I'm not too hard on them, but I don't baby them either. The last several thousand miles have been on 33s & I tow a 5x8 enclosed trailer occasionally.

use your brain not your brakes

50 k and still have 60% left.

I don't tailgate. (so i don't have to brake because people infront of me are slowing or turning i have enough room to coast)
I don't ride my brakes EVER.
I anticipate (if there is a hill infront of me i use the hill to slow me down. if there is a stop light ahead i coast up to it rather than having to use my brakes. I downshift carefully when appropriate and don't ride/wear the clutch when i do it (read: I rev match)

its the wizard not the wand. the pilot not the plane. the native american not the arrow.

if you think you drive like this..ask yourself how much time you spend WITHOUT touching the gas OR the brake. Most people go from one to the other.

if you do infact drive "correctly" then your abnormal wear will likely be skewed on one side (left or right) rather than across both and is being caused by some problem in your system (ie pressure or a rusted piston in your caliber) although at 12k its highly unlikely.

My advice: put some room between you and the vehicle infront of you and look 12 seconds ahead so you can anticipate rather than using your brakes, use your brain.

Actually it's not that hard. I notice it all the time when I'm behind a "brake tapper." Every little curve in the road, gotta tap the brakes. Or the ones that hit their brakes on the highway going 70 with nothing in front of them. :confused: Always amazes me how people don't realize that if you lift off the gas, you'll slow down.

I got about 35k out my my old TJ's pads, all city miles.
I changed them and got about 300 miles out of the new pads. I went to stop one day and heard crrrruuuuuunch and veered right. One of the brake pads had separated from the steel plate. Sometimes the wand is cracked, the wing falls off, or the arrow is crooked. ;)

i had a nice long clever rip all written out, but thats not really what i want to say or how i want to come across. If your child is driving i'll give him/her plenty of room to make mistakes and i won't tailgate them EVEN if they are driving UNDER the speed limit.

I am 27 and i pay 550 dollars a year for FULL(yes full and not bare minimum FULL either) insurance. More importantly i get places safely and on time.

think of driving in seconds next time you see someone tailgating..and consider how many SECONDS that person is ahead of someone like me. usually 2-4 seconds. If anything happens infront of them (the person turns, slows down, or a plane falls from the sky and crushes them) you go from being 2-4 seconds ahead of where i'll be to being in an accident or at the very least having to brake...where as i'll just coast and by the time i get close to the person they are either turned off the road and i am barely inconvenienced at all...i don't drive the way i do because i'm smarter or scared..i drive that way because its easier and safer for me and everyone around me..not to mention more efficient.
