High pitched squeaking sound coming from underneath. [Video inside]

Hey guys.. About a month ago my 04 WJ started making this random squeak sound while driving. It seems completely independent of any brake use, acceleration, turning, or tire rotation. I wasn't really sure what to search for as I have no idea what's causing the sound but I ended up coming across some old stuff for an issue called "angry sparrows" which apparently has something to do with u-joints and drive shaft issues. Nothing in those posts had any video or audio to compare though so i'm not sure if that's what my problem is. I also didn't find anything specifically related to WJs. Anyway, I rigged my cell phone up underneath and got a vid to capture the sound. You can hear it at..

loudest one at 2:09

It's very apparent though so you don't really need to watch for the exact times. You'll hear it.

(Not exactly sure how to imbed the video on the page. Here is the URL:

p.s, sound gets sort of loud and distorted at some parts from the wind so watch out if you have headphones on or have your volume loud.

Thanks dudes.

Looking at this and listening I'm thinking one of two things.. Its either your TC or the viscous coupling, as when you revers out the drive way you can hear it clicking. You Tube both and google squealing TC and watch what turns up.. not trying to scare you or anything as I have a Knackered 247 and that's what inspired me to look...

watching the times and seeing the video, it sounds like it's making the noise as soon as the suspension is jarred. Check your control arm bushings and related bushings that deal in travel. I had a slamed Tacoma that had Eurathane control arm bushings and when i didn't grease them thats what they sounded like every time ths suspension was put under load or a load was removed from the vehicle. Hope this helps....maybe check your engine & trans mounts too

ttt! Thank you for posting this video, I have been fighting this for two winters now!

Mine does the exact same thing, usually when driven from a cold park and it's between 20 and 50 degrees. Except will make the squeal continuously for as much as a block or two. I have had it in twice and they can not for the life of them figure out what it is.

Mine will do it in a straight line cold, it seems to be coming from the right front (sorta kinda) and has the faintest rotational sound to it. If I make a left turn (thereby loading the right front) that will often start it as well.

Thanks for posting this, if we don't get an definite solution here at least I have a video to let my mechanic listen to.

P.S. The first time I had it in they replaced a rubber seal on the front diff they said was squealing, but that was not it.

Sounds like the same thing, especially as far as the temperate and cold start stuff. Mine seems more like front left and I haven't noticed it continuously correlating with a left or right turn but hopefully we can figure it out lol. Please post back in here if you figure yours out as I am still tinkering and trying to figure it out. Glad my video could help!

Angry sparrows, there's a new one. I've described to my mechanic both as "choking a kitten" (yes they laughed at me) and "letting the air out of a balloon squeal". I've not been able to find anybody that I was positive had the same sound, but YOU DO! Don't you feel special?

it seemed to "squawk" when you lifted off the accelerator after a moderate acceleration.

It wont hurt to pull the front drive shaft for a minute and see if it goes away. If its still there, check your transfer case bearings and/or fluid levels.

Stop thinking and researching about what it could be and start eliminating possible sources!

My Wrangler makes that noise!

My 05 Jeep Wrangler started making this noise recently after someone hit my front passenger side fender. Of course when i took it in, it didn't make the noise. Thank you for the video. I will play it for my mechanic. I would love to know what it is and how to fix it.

Ok, so it does seem to have a rotational element to it at times like KayCeeJeep mentioned. I guess that would eliminate engine and trans mounts as well as suspension as mentioned above..

WJChris - I'm a full time student and work full time so unfortunately I don't have time for wrenching until semester is finished. :-/

I still haven't had mine fixed although I've had it in they couldn't find it and it wouldn't perform on demand of course. This year it is doing it far less (so far) than the past two winters but I am pretty much settled on it's some kind of bearing issue.

ive had this issue with mine for about 2 years now and it seems to only happen when its parked for a long period of time and cold. mine is a little louder and can be heard inside the cab sounds like its coming from passenger side dash boardish area. sounds like a pissed off bird lol. would be nice to see what others think.

I was able to take my jeep to the mechanic. They took it for a test drive and heard the squealing. They put it on the lift and sprayed PB blaster in the area behind the hub while rotating the tire. I have driven it for about 50 miles and no squeal. Here in indiana there has been a lot of salt on the roads this winter. It makes me think that has something to do with it.

I had the same issue begin this winter on my 04 WJ. I replaced the hub unit with a new Timken one but the squeal came back when it dropped below freezing again. As suggested here, I sprayed lubricant on the back side of the knuckle and haven't heard the noise since. I'm located in Seattle, so no salt here.
