I need some advice on replacing the steering box in my 98 Tj. I have a good bit of slop in the steering wheel. I have replaced everything in the steering system besides the steering box. I am looking for more of a stock replacement since my Jeep spends a good bit of time on the pavement. I would love to go to the PSC big bore box but it’s to far out of my price range. I have read mixed reviews on the red head steering boxes and it seems like the parts stores are a crap shoot. Any recommendations or advise would be appreciated. Has any used ac delco or other brands on rock auto.

Thanks
Ben

I'm currently in the exact same boat as you Ben. I've had two bad gears from local auto parts stores and I'm tired of dealing with remans so I'm only considering new boxes at this point. I've also done the durango swap and plan to go back to a more TJ like feeling box. So far in my search the crown box is winning.

This is the first I am hearing about the crown box. Usually crown parts are hit or miss or atleast that’s what I have read over on the Cj side of the forum. I have read lots on the red head stuff but the more recent reviews have not been as good as prior years. Part of me wants to put a PSC in and be done but the price is just so steep.

I needed a steering box for some time but didn't want to replace it with a used one or parts store one. I waited and got a PSC steering gear box from NorthRidge 4x4 during a black Friday sale. IIRC it was 22% off without sales tax and free shipping.
