any Golden Eagle owners or Jeep history buffs out there that may be able to tell me if the Golden Eagle edition package came with white rims instead of gold? I have a 79' with Golden Eagle decals on hood, but the rims are white. PO said those were the rims that came with the jeep as far as he knows.
Any pic's or links with pic's of Golden Eagle jeeps would be great.

I would think some parts MAY have been changed out over the last 32 years. I sure those were the rims that were on there from the previous owner, just not the original owner sometime before that.

the PO was the original owner of the jeep. everything that i've read about the Golden Eagle edition did have the gold rims. he must have changed them at one time. i'm trying to get in touch with him to see if he has any old pics of the jeep. Thanks for the replies. Most of the Golden Eagle jeeps that i've seen are also brown or white with the gold trim. The jeep that i have is like a burgandy or dark reddish color, anybody have any ideas what this color was called?

WOW. I've only seen brown and white G/E's. Burgandy? Have you found any info that this is an original? Old dealer pics/brochures? Not calling ya a liar, or that he robbed ya. Would this sites' registry help at all? It seems rare indeed!

I remember a movie about that Jeep. What was it..."Dusty and the Horse Thief"?

Later they made a crummy version w/a Trans-Am. :teehee:

I owned a '78 Sand Tan CJ5 Golden Eagle. I still have the original window sticker.

The Golden Eagle Package cost $1,249.00 and base price for a '78 CJ5 was $4,895.00.

The sticker does not list the type or color of wheels.

I have a 78 Sales Brochure, from the factory all Golden Eagles came with gold wheels. That being said, there was nothing to stop the dealer or new owner from swapping wheels, or having white spokes put on. A friend of mine had a Mocha Brown 78 Golden Eagle he bought new, one of the first things he did was to put on 11-15 Armstrong Tru Tracs on Jackman White Spokes, he drove it out of the dealership that way and cut a deal with the dealer for trading the OEM wheels/tires for the aftermarket ones.

Also, according to the 78 Sales Brochure, the Golden Eagle could be purchased with several colors, not just the Brown, Black, White, and Tan. When I was in college, one guy had a Burgundy 78 or 79 Cherokee Golden Eagle that was lifted, and was a very good looking Cherokee.

Of course, there was nothing to stop a CJ owner back then from buying the Golden Eagle decal and putting it on their Jeep, I am sure that happened also. I know some guys that put Renegade stripes on their CJs, even though they were not factory Renegades.

Unfortunately, without specific VIN coding, there is no way to be really sure what options those CJs came with, unless you have the build sheet or original owner verification.

The way I view these old CJs is, buy it because you want an old CJ, don't get hung up on whether or not it is a Golden Eagle or Renegade, there are a lot of fakes out there any more.

thanks for all the input and info on the Golden Eagle. I called the PO and asked for some pic's of the jeep when it was bought, i'm sure that will answer alot of questions that i have about the jeep. i will also post some pictures of it when i got it. it's kind of hard to tell the color since it is very faded, that's why i said burgandy or reddish.

been doing alittle research, according to "history of jeep" 2nd edition, the Golden Eagle Edition was introduced in 1977. The package offered ran for a couple of years thru 1979. The package for the Golden Eagle came with gold rims and gold trim. The original color was Oakleaf brown. It didn't say if any other colors came out for 78 and 79, but i have seen white Golden Eagle's out there, so i guess the color of my jeep with the white rims varifies that it is not a Golden Eagle.

I have owned my '78 AMC CJ5 Golden Eagle since it was new! Weird, cuz I'm still young! (Check it out on the second page of the CJ5 Registry). Real GE's definately had GOLD rims with black pinstripes. They also had special decals (Eagle on hood) and body pinstriping. There was also a gold pinstipe around the grille. Since Chrysler now owns the patent, they do not allow anyone to reproduce the grille stipes (Bums!). As a result, if a "GE" doesn't have this, it was either re-painted or is not original. GE's also came with Tan Denim (not blue) seats with Levi buttons, tan denin WHITCO softtop (or hardtop if a CJ7) & padded dash, special carpeting, black side rocker panels, sport steering wheel,tach/clock, Tracker AT tires, etc. The very first ones had a "Limited Edition" decal on each side of the hood as well. The fewer of these things a "GE" has today, the less likely it was originally a true GE or it has been reworked. Paint choices were limited to the original Oakleaf Brown (like mine), then they added black, white, red and green as a choice. Oh, and they had a FIXED tailgate. Mine is constansly being "upgraded" but I always stay true to its GE heritage.
Hope this helps

Sam,
I have a 78 CJ5 Golden Eagle I bought from my brother. He bought it in 79 from the first owner but it did not have the window sticker. I have been reproducing the window sticker based on others I have found posted on the internet but they did not have the breakdown for a 78 Golden Eagle. Can you post a picture of your window sticker?

I have a CJ7 79 GE and it is Alpaca Brown. The code 9A is on the firewall. I am holding a sales brochure from 79 and the GE could not come in Arrowhead Silver Met., Saxon Yellow, Wedgewood Blue,Ensign Blue, Mandarin Orange, or Firecracker Red.

It was available in White, Black, Morracco Buff(beige), Alpaca Brown Met, Sable Brown, Cumberland Green Met., Russet Met., and Bordeaux Met. (probably the color you have).

GE package-Hood decal w/black & gold lettering, body side and grille striping, gold w/black accent stripe rims w/wheellip extensions, spare tire lock, swing-away tire carrier, tan denim bucket seats and bench backseats (78 last year to use the word "Levi"),tan denim softtop, brown carpeting, roll bar, Convenience group, decor group with black rocker panel molding, tach and clock. If hardtop it will be tan and have bronze-tone tinted windows.

More data if you need it.

I have the original window sticker from my '78 Jeep CJ5 Golden Eagle.

The color was Sand Tan - and it was listed as a standard no cost option.

once again thanks for all of the info. I FINALLY found out what the original color of my 79' CJ5 was. And of course based on all the information posted, it's definitely not a Golden Eagle, the color was coppertone!

I had a '78 CJ5 Golden Eagle that was blue and had the red "Levis" sticker and denim blue interior, dash pad and top. I was the second owner, but I think the original wheels were white wagon or chrome wagon. I'm almost certain they weren't gold. I'll look for photo of it w/the first owner.

If you had a 78 CJ Golden Eagle that was blue, with a blue denim interior, and the red levi's sticker on the side, and wagon wheels that were white or chrome, it was not a Golden Eagle. Golden Eagles came only with the levi's tan interior, levi's tan soft top, no levi's sticker on the side, and gold colored wagon wheels. It sounds like you had Renegade with a Golden Eagle applied to the hood. In checking my 78 Jeep sales brochure the Golden Eagle package was only available with colors such as Alpine White, Loden Green, Oakleaf Brown, Mocha Brown, Golden Ginger, Sand Tan, and Classic Black only. Two colors of blue are listed, Brilliant Blue and Captain Blue, and both of those colors show the GE as not available. Other colors not available with the GE were Pewter Gray, Autumn Red, Firecracker Red, Sun Orange, and Sunshine Yellow.
