Well just bought a ford 9 inch housing and low pinion carrier, suppose to be off a 67 bronco and without the axles on or the brakes it measures 53 1/2 inches. Mine now AMC 20 measures 47 inches, but with the drum brakes and the 2 inch spacers it comes to 57 1/2 inches wheel mount to wheel mount.....It's a narrow track by the way. So, with that being said, I got the axles, just 28 spline, drum brakes, low pinion carrier in GREAT shape.... gears are shot of course, and housing already primed and painted with that black heavy duty paint.... the name escapes me right now, for 175$$$ So questions are after measuring it i am wondering if this is closer to a wide track axle. Quest #2 Should i stay with low pinion with a SOA set up...it is cheaper to just buy gears and stuff. Quest #3 Should i opt for the 31 spline.... I know the answer to this one..... and what is the best posi for me 80% road 20% moderate trail riding with the occasional mud pit. Need some help. It was a great deal for the stuff but will it all work for me. If its a wide track then i have to go find a whole front axle set up $$$$$$$$
like not to do that

That ought to make you a great rear axle assembly. The pinion on 9" are lower to begin with that almost any other. If you're doing a spring over you going to have some serious driveshaft angle to deal with. I'd go high pinion if I had to have that much lift.

Yes on the 31 spline.

Detroit True Trac would be ideal for what you descibe in doing. They have many great reports right here on this site!

High pinion if you have the $$$ although I have no issues with mine being a low pinion (spring under)

31 spline or more, if your doing it why not a 40 spline

Detroit True Track since most of the drivning is on the road.

here is a pic, i hope i can load it of the angle of the drive shaft. currie 3rd member with all the fixins is 1600 dollars. i dont want to pay that. New axles 31 spline 250.....bronco graveyard for all stuff, tru trac... 450....4.10 gears.....185, instal gear kit,...50 totals 950 so in bad *** axle for 1000 bucks

An idea may be to go with the low pinion and double cardan u-joints, which you have, to see how it works. You might be able to shim the rear axle pointing the pinion up some to help too. If that fails you could lower the transfer case a couple of inches. That would keep you away from the high pinion. I'm sure there will be other ideas on this. One thing to consider is that the Ford 9" pinion will be about 2 1/2" to 3" lower than where it is now so if you have trouble now you most likely will later.
