I have the original setup on my 06 rubicon and I have plans to cut the old muffler and cat that sits just b4 the muffler off and install a flowmaster super 50. has anyone else done this? I now it won't generate any more horse power but I have the cold air K&N and i would like a little better flow from the rear as well

Are you going to remove the cat? If so, open with care.

My TJ was almost deafing loud with a similar style muffler combined with high-flow cats. There was a noticeable loss of low-end torque as well, it droned terribly at 40-50mph, and basically ruined the Jeep. Installed an OEM style muffler two days later, it was that annoying to drive.

Now I have high-flow cats into an OEM-style muffler. Good deep tone with a nice rumble but still quiet enough to be nice to drive. It still sounds like a 4.0but it's more defined and less "tinny" compared to the stock exhaust. I can't see a flowmaster 50 sounding good with no third cat, especially as the third cat is basically the resonator for the exhaust.

Also, the cold air K&N tube doesn't make a difference, it's actually worse than stock since it's sucking in hot air from the engine compartment. If you want better airflow and cooler air, a cowl induction setup or the stock airbox would be best. I have a windstar cowl intake setup and it works very well.

Where is the cold air coming from? :teehee:

What wouldnt work about a snorkel? It places your intake higher away from possible water. What doesnt work it what a cai claims to do. Cold air and better flow. Both wrong and unnecessary on our application. If you want a muffler fet a muffler many do. However many dont make the mistake of thinking it adds anything as far as flow or performance is concerned. Call us "experts" all you want, but most of us have been there, and wasted our money on that.

Ditch the K&N and do a windstar intake mod JMHO. For the "performance" filters like K&N or specter they need to be oiled regularly to trap the fine particles. If you ever hold one up to the light you will see what I mean. The problem with the oil is that it can fowl sensors just like the crank case breather going into the intake that I bypassed with a filter. Also being under your hood is not cold air because temps under your hood are well over 200 degrees. Snorkels or intakes like the windstar draw air from outside the engine bay resulting in a true cold air intake. Do these CAI increase HP. Maybe. IDK. I did it to create room and get rid of the K&N that came on my jeep asap. As for mufflers, I run a flowmaster supper 44 with a stock cat. I like it a lot. No drone on the highway but still sounds good going around town. I have thought about removing the third cat but I feel it would cause a lot of drone and as someone else stated, there is a possible loss of low end torque.
Hope this helps.

well the jeep now has the new muffler and it sounds great. going from the 35x12.5x15 to the 32x11.5x15 has also made a huge difference. it looks a bit anorexic but my wife likes it and it is her primary vehicle so what do I care? I also took out the spacers between the skid plate and the tranny and it shifts like brand r new. the speedo is also correct now. I think we can just drive and enjoy it now. you guys have a great weekend

As long as she's happy that's all that matters. going to a smaller tire will make it more drivable and would help in how the transmission shifts. The spacers between the tranny and skid plate were there to help reduce drive line vibrations due to the amount of lift the JEEP has. Not sure how that would affect the transmission shifting, but it would affect how you're able to shift from 2h to 4h or 4l. The speedo can be adjusted by changing out the $40 gear in the transfer case, sounds like the PO was not aware of that. Anyway good job getting it to the way you like it.
