Electrical Problems!?....maybe related to Remote Start???

Was wondering if anyone out there could help. Just about two years ago I had remote start put on my 2009 JK Wrangler X. Had no problems with it when it was installed, however, my hazards would flash while it was running. The "professionals" that installed it said it just does that with the Jeeps and there was no way to work around it.

Well starting about last fall, once I started using it again, I noticed that when I got into the jeep that not only did my hazards flash while it was runing, but all my dash lights and clock would flash as well....all at the same time. Then eventually even my heater was blowing in an on/off fashion with all the lights. (which didn't help to actually heat the Jeep)

So, I took it back into the place that did that install as it has a lifetime warranty. They initially acted as if I was making it all up or something, but the tech came out and said somehow the remote start unit reset itself and was attempting to start a Chrysler Sebring (lol)....they said they fixed it at no cost. Well about 6 weeks later its doing it again and now I have instances were all my lights (interior/exterior) will go out for about 1-2 seconds while on the road...even my gauges will drop to zero then bounce back and my clock keeps resetting. (which is the most annoying thing)

I've contacted Jeep to have them look at it in about a week. Performance wise it seems to be running just fine...but there are definately some electrical gremlins running around in it. Was just wondering if anyone had any advice or issues like this before. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

BTW.....if it is the remote start causing this....and since its aftermarket...will that void my warranty???....if so I am so going back to that place and getting it replaced with a complete new version/model. Thanks again.

Ok this may or may not help...I had a similar issue last week. Got in to start the Jeep and it was dead. This was starange because I have dual batteries. I check the voltage with a volt meter and the secondary battery had 13.4V and the primary had 4.3V. I tired to Jump it with the secondary battery and that is when things got strange. It would not start and when I took the key out all the lights including side markers where flashing very rapidly. The dash light where also all flashing. After I started thinking about it I had been have weird electrical things happening for a week prior to this. I then removed the main battery connections and connected them to the secondary battery and the same wierd flashing thing and no start. I wired everything back up and started looking around under the hood. Two little yellow wires coming out of the fuse panel had been disconnected ever since I got the Jeep. I assumed that they were bypassed for the remote start or IPF lights that AEV installed as I have never had an issue with them for over 2 and a half years. This time however they had broken loose from the ziptie holding them up and out of the way and had melted to the manifold. I pried them off and the Jeep started right up and all the little electrical things that were wrong all seem to be fine now. I am by no means a mechanic and just got luck if this infact was my problem. I have been monitoring everything for the last week and all is well and both batteries are functioning properly. Maybe this will help:cheers2:

My experience, even with "professionally" installed remote starters, is that they work well when they are new, but when their inferior grade electrical connections begin to corrode/oxidize, then you start to see problems. My rule of thumb is: if you want a remote starter, get it from the factory, otherwise they are off limits.

My wife had one installed on her old Equinox. It wouldn't start sometimes, the battery would drain sometimes... constant issues even after it was removed.

The problems kept up until we sold it. We were told after the fact that it might have been due to a bypass module not being installed.

I've used aftermarket remote start for four years or so now. If you buy a $99 remote start or have someone working out of a driveway put it in, you are going to regret it. I went with a reputable shop that has been doing them for a decade and I've had no problems at all.

Mine is also a 2009 X, and your installer is lying to you. My hazards flash when the vehicle acknowledges a remote start command, but they never flash while the vehicle is running. You've got a bad wire somewhere, probably a ground from the sound of it.

I would go back to the remote installer and chew them out. Chrysler will straighten the problem out, but I doubt they will cover it under warranty. It's possible that it's not a problem with the starter, but that seems the likely culprit.

Sad thing is I've been going to this place for years. For remote starts, tinted windows, etc....pretty reputable place. Just upsets me that after being a customer for almost 12 years they would act the way they did. I'm pretty sure its the remote start....just never had a problem before with them putting one in a vehicle before. But guess there is a first time for everything. Will see what Jeep says in a week. If they think it is the remote start I'm taking it straight down there and having them fix this. Thanks everyone for the quick response.

Having a somewhat similiar issue here. I have a 2005 GC and had the MOPAR remote start kit installed in it shortly after purchasing it in '05. Everything had been working fine until about 2 months ago when we had the first sub-zero day of the year. Jeep wouldn't start in the morning so I hooked up battery charger to it and started it up just fine. Worked flawlessly until the next sub-zero day and the same thing happened. At this point I figured battery is 5.5 years old so might as well replace it now. Put the replacement battery in and it works for 3 days then stops working again. Got to the point where even the battery charger hooked up to it wouldn't start it. Got a replacement battery and it was working for 4 days up until this morning, which was the first time I tried the remote starter since putting the new battery in. The remote start actually started it but after 10 mins it automatically shuts off as programmed and I went out to put the key in the ignition to leave and the thing doesn't start. Also, before getting the replacement battery I tested my alternator and it was working fine. Any ideas?

My son (don't get me started) had one intalled on his 09 JK and it works and his lights work. However, he started adding rocker switches and lights all over the thing and it is now blowing fuses. I think he overloaded it.

Remote start alone was OK. Sounds like you got Weissed.

LOL....yeah...I think I did get Weissed....well I took it in to Jeep/Chrysler....they ran a computer diagnostic test on it...said it came back with something they could not duplicate and that it was related to the ignition. They said it was most likely the remote start that was the culprit.

So, from there I took it into the place that did the install.....explained everything....AGAIN....and they looked at me like I was crazy....AGAIN........that is until the actual installer (technician) actually looked at the module and realized there was an updated one to the remote start they installed.... apparently the manufacturer was having some issues with it....gotta love it....so they replaced it free of charge. And now...so far so good. Hopefully it stays that way.
