Drag Link Question

Hi y’all,

I am in the process of getting parts to replace the Tie Rod, drag link, and upper and lower ball joints. I have everything in my possession but the spicer ball joins which are on their way to me.

I bought a Moog tie rod (the one that is for the grand Cherokee), moog tie rod end, and moog sleeve.

For the drag link set up, I bought the Napa proformer chassis drag link, tie rod end, and sleeve. The employee at the Napa store told me that these were all made by Moog. After inspecting and comparing them, they do not look like they are made by Moog.

I am a newbie when it comes to parts and working on jeeps, so I am learning as I go.

I have attached 2 pictures of the drag link boot, a picture of the Napa ES3096, and a picture of the Moog ES3096L.

I have 3 questions.

1. Should I return the Napa parts and spring for the slightly more expensive Moog brand?

2. Does the boot look funny or wrong in the picture of the end of the drag link? It kinda looks a little skinny and long instead of round and fat to me.

3. Does the boot on the Napa ES3096 look like it will not hold up as well as the boot on the Moog ES3096L?

Thanks for any advice!

The boots are fine..they make look different but serve the same purpose.

So you got a V8 ZJ Tie Rod? Did you buy a TJ Draglink? They are different on the TJ vs ZJ, so make sure you get the TJ Drag link. I would see if they have a Moog branded Draglink OR get a CROWN replacement. I am sure Napa will tell you IT IS Moog , just rebranded. From the pictures Moog is typically not BLACK in color.

I did get a TJ drag link. I read that the ZJ had a different angle. And yes, the tie rod is a Moog V8 ZJ.

Napa had the drag link for $63. Amazon has the actual Moog brand drag link for $107. I was trying to save a little cash by going with the whole drag link set up by buying the Napa proformer chassis brand. So you are suggesting to return the Napa parts and spend the extra cash on Moog parts?

Also, the Napa parts are painted black, the moog parts came bare metal.

I only use Moog TREs. Its up to you what you want to do. I don't think it will make that much difference. I am sure Napa brand carries a decent warranty anyways.

There are a few parts stores that use MOOG parts numbers but they are different than actual MOOG parts. BUT the last MOOG parts got years back didn't last more than a few years.

I got my last TREs from AutoZone, at least last ones I will pay for. I doubt these are any better, but at this point they have lasted about as long as actual MOOG parts. The difference is a lifetime warranty tracked by my phone number. I have had to get items replaced under warranty from AutoZone and I had no issues, no questions asked. I just call ahead to make sure they have the part in stock, if not they order it, I go in given them my phone number and old part, they give me a new one, no charge no grief.

I haven't had to replace ball joints on my jeep, but I have on other vehicles. Ball joints aren't as easy to replace as TREs so I would get ones that did have a good reputation.

Well now I’m totally lost as to what to do. The Napa parts carry a 12 month warranty. I just want to put good quality parts on my Jeep. I’ve always heard that Napa is supposed to have great quality, even in their “value” parts like I bought.

If the consensus is that my Napa parts are good, I really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning and ordering new parts. The moog branded drag link is quite a bit more expensive, but if it’s really worth it, I’ll spring for it.

just stick with the Napa draglink. The only thing to worry about wearing out quicker is the TRE on the Tie Rod connection. That ALWAYS wears out first and it is NOT replaceable. You have to get a whole new Drag link. Just make sure to check for wear before a year is up and get a new one warrantied if its worn :)

AutoZone's "MOOGS" have a lifetime. The ones on rock auto might have a lifetime warranty. For me it is easier just take the old one in to a store and come out with a new one instead of packaging things up, shipping them and waiting for the return.
