Did all TJs come with a Passenger Airbag?

I have an 8 yr old that is gonna love riding in my new Jeep (when I finally pull the trigger and buy one) and I think the front seat is a more safe place for her to be than in the back, but she's not big enough to be in front of a "bag" yet....

Just like the title says, I'm wondering if ALL TJs came with a passenger side airbag.

Also, did all TJs (with the passenger side Airbag) have a shutoff switch for the passenger side "bag"?

This info will probably affect my purchase decision.

Thanks!

They all come with passenger airbags, only some come with passenger airbag turnoff switches... the early model TJs. Late model TJs have a weight detection sensor.

So if no one is sitting in the seat or if they are under a certain weight then the airbag will not deploy? Thats interesting and I never knew that about my Jeep. Maybe I should read the manual.

I specifically went looking for an 02 for this reason- I wanted to bag "off" switch so my 11 year old can sit up front. It seems like a safer option than the supposedly "smart" second generation airbags in the later models. There have benn way too many kids injured by supposedly safe second generation airbags.

Once again, the TJ DOES NOT have an Occupant Classification System. Or in terms that you may understand, if you get in a wreck, BOTH airbags (driver's side and passenger's side) will inflate. On models with an airbag on/off switch, the passenger side airbag can be de-activated. On '03 and up TJ's, there is no de-activation switch...KIDS RIDE IN THE BACK.

:agree: I have an '06, and there is no cutoff for the airbag. And if there is an accident that inflates the bags, both will inflate. If the passenger side airbag had the system that sense's a passenger (Occupant Classification System) there would be an indicator light to tell you when it was or wasn't engaged. It senses the weight of the passenger. The passenger has to be above 100lbs. to engage the bag. My wife's Liberty has the system. WRANGLER'S DO NOT

While the pasenger bag will still deploy, the folks at DC (who I spent alot of time with on the phone a few months ago) told me that at least the 06 comes with a "smart" airbag that will sense an under 100lb body in the seat and only partially deploy. They couldn't give me any information on the 03- 05 models.

TJ's do not. JK's which are still Wranglers do. I really wish my 98 had the switch. This company makes a switch that you are supposed to be able to install yourself. I asked them for instructions for the Wrangler though and they did not have Wrangler specific instructions.

Yeah, it bugs me that my kids can't ride up front.

My 05 doesn't have any seat sensors or wiring to the seat.

The only thing that bugs me about my TJ.

I am slighty worried about liability if I deactivate the passenger AB and have an accident that it would have helped in. Especially if they were an over 100lb passenger.

Are there any legal precedents about a driver having an disabled airbag and an injured passenger or faily suing? i'd think that's what killed the switch on 03 and up wranglers.

There's a reason there is no airbag on/off switch on the '03 - '06 TJ's...they all have a standard rear seat on the vehicle. Since the rear seat came as a standard feature on these vehicles, the kids are supposed to ride in the rear seat (which is why the rear seat is equipped with LATCH car seat anchors).

On the '02 and prior model TJ's, the rear seat was an option on some models, and as such, just like in a pickup, an airbag on/off switch was installed.

Again, there is no weight sensor on the passenger seat for '06 Model TJ's. This feature is not available on the TJ, it is on the '07 model JK Wrangler's (that's why the passenger seat on the JK does not have the tilt/slide feature of the TJ Wrangler).

Guys, I sell Jeeps for a living, and have done so since 2001. I know very well what safety items come on which models of Wrangler's.

One last thing...THERE IS NO WEIGHT SENSOR/OCCUPANT CLASSICATION SYSTEM/AIRBAG ON/OFF FEATURE ON '03 THROUGH '06 TJ'S

Thanks for the thoughts guys....

Looks like I'm searching for a 99-02.
Not sure about the 99's, but the 2000 has a distrubutorless ignition, one less thing to have to maintain. I'm pretty sure the 00 is the first year for this, but I've been wrong... a lot....

On a side note, I recently test drove a 2005 Rubi just for fun (I was bored) and didn't like it at all. The steering felt overboosted compared to my 00 Sport, the 6 speed shifter crunched BAD going into second (now I know what everybody's talking about), the clutch let up way higher than I'm used to, and felt like a car's clutch. Overall, I think my 00 Sport drives better than that 05 Rubi. I have the same size tires too, but mine are BFG AT's, must admit I liked that little bit of buzz out of the MT/R's, wish it was louder. Point of the story, you won't be dissappointed with an 00-02 Sport or X. They're good rigs.
