Been researching & reading up on Dana 44 swaps. Have an '84 CJ-7 with Dana 300 & would like to upgrade the axles. Looks like Wagoneers & Scouts are the typical donors. I would prefer to match the original axle width fairly closely.

Are there certain years or models that I should look for?

Are there better donors available?

What about lug nut bolt pattern?

Thanks.

There is no stock D44 front that matches the CJ WT D30 front. To get to CJ WT width (56") you'll need to shorted a D44. Scouts and Waggoners (pre '80) used passenger drop D44 fronts. Scouts are ~58", I think the Waggy is closer to 60". The Scout is 5 on 5.5" lug pattern (same as CJ). The Waggy is 6 on 5.5", same as Chevy, but it can be swapped over to 5 lug pretty easy (5 lug will add ~1" overall width. Scouts have no caster, so you'll have to fix that. Scouts also have smaller shafts and D30 outers. Waggy has normal D44 outers.

Scouts will be close to width, but wider and normally you have to outboard the front spring mounts to get it to fit. Wagoneer will likely be an offset rear dana 44 or an AMC20, same with front being wider and needing to outboard mount the spring hangars. You can pair the Isuzu Rodeo dana 44 rear with a wagoneer narrow track front, both approx 60" wide and 6 lug. somewhat limited ratios with the isuzu rear 44 though without doing some custom work on the setup.

Mid-1986 to 91 Fullsize Jeep is a centered Dana 44.

There's SO MUCH info that most of us have posted many, many times on this site and elsewhere on the web regarding this swap. I hate being the go search google guy, but I don't have the patience to type my take on the subject one more time.
