Crown HD steering kit VS Moog

About a year or so ago I put a Crown steering kit on my 98 4.0. Probably about 6K miles or so later the passenger side tie rod is worn out and the drag link tie rod is starting to show play. Enough to cause the dreaded death wobble with no lift. I have read somewhere that the Crown kit is sourced off the 96 V8 and has bigger parts. Looking through the Moog Catalog I see that they are different although they don't seem to list what is different. So I guess my questions are these:

  • Are the Moog parts better than the Crown parts?
  • will the 1996 V8 version fit the 4.0?
    • Is it worth spending another $150 for the Moog? It's about $172 for Crown vs $320 for the Moog parts.

I greased the tie rods with Hi Temp moly disc brake grease when I put the crown unit on, plus I replaced the boots with the poly units since I read that the stock ones tear. I don't mind spending the extra money if it will stop the DW, When I put the Crown unit on, I also put a Monroe Magnum damper at the same time. Funny thing is, after the first time it did the dance of death, I took it to a garage I use when I'm too busy at work to look at the Jeep. They put upper and lower control arms on, a new track bar and a pitman arm. I thought it was fixed, but 90% of the driving is in the city.

Decided to take a trip upstate, was fine until I hit the "right bump" and again with the death wobble. Doesn't bother me as much as the wife, scares the crap out of her. She wants to just get out of the car and walk home. The tires were worn but not under inspection limit. So I spent the $650 for some new GoodYears and a alignment at Mavis. Told them about the death wobble, etc. The did it all and told me all was tight, everything was fine, have a nice day. Got about 20 miles down the road, hit another of the "right bumps" and again wobble city. I'm just glad the people behind me didn't plow into me when I threw out the anchor to stop the wobble.

Took it back to the original guy and they looked it over and said all was tight, probably was caused by body flex due to rusting from the salt bath it gets in the winter. After that I figured it was about time to put the ole Jeep down. After a few back and forth PMs with Uni, I took it to work and checked under it to see what is moving and could I possibly do a little fab work to repair the control arm mounts that were supposedly flexing. To my surprise, what I found was the passenger tie rod moving quite a bit and the tie rod attached to the tie rod shaft from the pitman arm was moving about half that much. Didn't see any movement on the control arm mounts. Slight movement on the Track bar bushing end, but I've read that the bushings are a little too soft. I put an oversize bolt in there to take up the frame slop so that's nice and tight. So two guys, one twice, looked at it and didn't see the tie rod moving. I'm blind and I could see it easily. I would assume that when it's up on a lift and you grab the wheel and shake it, that you would feel that play. Oh well, guess I will just have to make the time to work on it myself, hard to do during the season though.

Sorry for the novel.

I hope you get some input from others on this MD as far as the Crown HD Steering Kit vs Moog parts.

Most of us went with the below "Crown HDSTRGCR1 HD Steering Kit" which is supposed to fit the 93-98 4.0 ZJ's. This is the kit which comes with the solid steel 1" OD steering shaft rather than the OE hollow less diameter one. Believe the V8 OE steering shaft is also solid steel 1" OD.

https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-keywords=Crown%20HDSTRgcr1%20hd%20steering%20kit&index=blended&link_code=qs&sourceid=Mozilla-search&tag=mozilla-20

The Crown site isn't much help and lists the "RT21004" HD steering kit for the 93-98 4.0. This may be exactly the same as the "HDSTRGCR1" kit from other vendors.

https://www.crownautomotive.net/Heavy-Duty-Steering-Kit/RT21004.html

It's too bad in the 'specs' section they don't list any measurements at all.

Kind of a shame MD is you have the Crown HD 1" OD solid steering shaft to go with a lesser one if it's Moog. Would be nice if the Moog tie rod ends would fit in this Crown steering shaft but unknown?

Anybody on Crown vs Moog steering parts?

i have all the Moog v8 parts saved in my cart at rockauto for my 4.0 and the total is only about 175 bucks before shipping. not sure where you are seeing 320 bucks for the Moog stuff, unless i'm missing something.

Just curious monte if that includes the Moog steering tube for the V8? In looking at Rockauto I'd have to agree I'm not seeing replacing all the steering parts with Moog that high.

I'd be have temped to buy a Moog tie rod end locally for that Crown HD steering tube to see if it fits? Kind of a shame to do away with that 1" OD solid steel Crown tube which isn't very old if it works with Moog tie rod ends.

not sure what the steering tube is, but my list has (2) ES3096L, (1) DS1312, (1) DS1310, (1) ES2079S(since i have one already). this replaces everything new(ish) especially the thin tube that connects the left and right tie rods.

Front Inner Tie Rod End - At Connecting Tie Rod Part Number: MOOG-DS1312 $76.75

Front Outer Tie Rod End - Passenger Side at Connecting Tie Rod - 5.2L Part Number: MOOG-DS1310 $118.65

Front Outer Tie Rod End - Driver Side Part Number: MOOG-ES3096L-Driver-Pitman $39.46 x 2 $78.92

Front Tie Rod Adjusting Sleeve Part Number: MOOG-ES2079S $21.42 x 2 $42.84

Sub Total: $317.16
I don't want to name the site in case they're a site sponsor but those were the prices. On Amazon it is about $100 cheaper. Haven't tried Rock Auto though. I wanted to put a OME steering stabilizer on it to try to knock out that "rubbery feel" the front end has after it hits a bump. It has had that feeling for as long as I've owned it, never went into the death wobble but you would feel the wheels wobble about 5 cycles after hitting a bump (at freeway speeds). Unfortunately it's more than a year old, probably closer to two now but it doesn't get a lot of miles on it, about 3K a year. Thanks for the link Kolak (Nick). From what I see, the Crown unit is 25mm compared to 22.2mm for the Moog tie rods. Hard to tell if they're the same angles though, but from what I've seen from the YouTube bunch, they seem to fit. I have the tech line number for Moog, will give them a call tomorrow. The Moog distributor I called didn't know anything about it but did give me their tech line number.

Just got off the phone with the Moog tech line guy. Wasn't much help but I really didn't expect much, they deal in stock OEM type replacement, not mix and match. From what I got from the conversation was that the 4.0 and 5.2 tie rod shaft from Moog are the same diameter and material (forged steel), but the length is slightly different (.230" longer on the 4.0). The thing he was concerned about was oil pan clearance since he didn't know if the bend was different on the two models. Since the shaft size and material are the same for the two tie rod shafts that Moog offers, might as well get the correct one, eh? From what I remember looking under the Jeep, on the 4.0 the tie rod isn't anywhere near the oil pan but I've never looked at an 8 cylinder.

The main tie rod on the 4.0 I6 is thinner vs the 5.2 V8. I looked at the MOOG catalog and their tie rod looks to be the same diameter as the stock 4.0 tie rod.

Also it makes sense that the length of the main tie rod would be different on the 4.0 vs the 5.2. The 4.0 has separate tie rod ends at both ends of the main tie rod. The 5.2 has an integrated tie rod end on one end of the tie rod and a separate one on the other.

The Crown HD kit mimics the 5.2 design in that regard. The main tie rod on the Crown kit is slightly thicker than the 5.2 tie rod.

So I received and installed the new Moog front end parts. I measured them compared to the Crown unit I was replacing. Looked identical, same angles, same diameter, same threads, forged solid steel, etc. Finish is a little different. The part numbers are as follows.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 1998 4.0

1-DS1311 Steering Tie Rod
1-DS1312 Tie Rod End
2-ES3096L Tie Rod End
2-ES2079S Tie Rod End Adjusting Sleeve
1-ARB OMESD40 Old Man Emu Steering Damper

The 6K mile old steering stabilizer (Monroe Magnum) was worthless, the stroke on it was cavitating allowing 1~1.5" undamped movement. Probably why it felt like the wheel would oscillate about five times after hitting a bump at speed without going into the dreaded death wobble. The Moog Tie Rods I listed will fit the Crown unit but of course they can only be used on the driver side since the passenger side is fixed on the shaft.
