Clutch Pedal Bushing

I've searched the forums and still a little confused. I need to replace the bushing on my clutch pedal. I don't believe that I have to take out the whole assembly to remove the pedal. There is a snap ring on the pivot shaft that I need to remove, return spring, clutch linkage. Is this the correct procedure? The brake pedal works fine for now.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I did not have to deal with the spring as my clutch had been converted to a hydraulic setup and no longer had the spring installed. If your pedal is similar to my 1985 CJ&, you will need a good set of right angle external snap ring pliers. I have a set that is convertible pliers similar to these:

Take your time, have good lighting and you will get it. I have had mine off several time converting to different master cylinders for the slave and a couple of times I had it off in 30 seconds and another time it took me 45 minutes and it just kept slipping.

How do you expect to press the new bushing in place without removing the pedal assembly? It will be extremely awkward if you don't remove the pedal assembly and you will be cursing yourself for not doing it. The shaft must come out in order to free up the clutch pedal to access the bushing and I do not think there is enough room to remove the pedal shaft to slide it out of the way.

Thanks for the responses. All the diagrams that I have seen it appeared that the new bushing is placed in the pedal and not pressed onto the shaft. I think there is just one on the 83 CJ7 clutch pedal. To make it more difficult I have a cage in the front so I would have to remove that to get some play in the dash.

I have wrenched on almost every bolt on the CJ so might as well touch these as well

The pedal is loose on the shaft, side to side. It creates a loud bang while driving. Brake pedal solid.
This will be my 16yr old boys vehicle so I need to button up the stuff that may be distracting to a new driver. I have lived with it for 10 yrs. But a teenager is a different story.

Does it have the wavy washers installed...side to side movement is not a bushing or bearing related problem...if it were twisting back and forth on the shaft or hard to spin on the shaft then it’s a bushing or bearing. If it’s side to side, it is likely a washer or spacing problem. Is the return spring in place too?

I agree with the above statement. If the pedal slides back or forth on the shaft but does not twist side to side then it is probably missing the wavy washer or the snap ring or both. Those bronze bushing are really tough. Mine had a little on the left side of the bushing chewed up because the snap ring was missing for a while but when I got a new snap ring and washers, everything was tight again.

This all makes sense. Did you put the snap ring and washer on while the pedal was still installed?
The snap ring and a washer are installed. It could use another one.
Do you all think I could put a C clip washer on the shaft. It would alleviate the need to take the pedal off.

I would think the C shaped washer would eventually weight itself where the open end faces up. I’m sure with some grease it would stay in place. The wavy washers will not completely eliminate 100% of the movement and stop all possible rattle but they stop it enough where it’s not noticed. I think I have two on Brutus, one before the brake pedal is slid on and one before the clutch peddle is slid on. You may be able to torque/bend inward on the arm(?) where the snap ring slides on...to take up a tad bit more slack. Make sense?

The pedal goes on the shaft, the washer goes on the shaft and an outside snap ring (requires 90 degree snap ring pliers to remove and install). I got my replacement snap ring from ACE hardware.

The clutch pedal can be freely removed while leaving the brake pedal in place on my 1985 CJ-7. If fact I just removed it for the last time when I installed a Wilwood single pedal assembly so that I would have a 7 to 1 ratio for my clutch slave master cylinder. I could not get the ratio right with the original pedal setup. I finally gave up and installed a $75.00 Wilwood pedal. I would have done both the brake and clutch pedal but I have the brakes working well and did not want to change that.
