Clicking in steering column

I found multiple threads on this in various other vehicles, with no definitive answers...nothing on the JK.

I have a clicking noise, like the turn signal only quieter, coming from the steering column in my 08 JKUR. Anybody else have this/know what it might be?

Is it constant or only when you turn the wheel from side to side? Some have had a bad clock spring in the steering column and the side to side could be the usual intermediate steering shaft issue...

search for intermediate shaft. This is what mine was when I had a knocking coming through the floorboard and steering wheel. You simply loosen the rubber cover on the shaft and grease the hell out of it with some Tractor or 5th wheel grease and problem solved! Lasts for about 6 months and then repeat. There is a good thread on here with a good pictorial. Good luck!

Okay I'm going to revisit this thread...
all of my research has led me to the "clunk" problem, and greasing the boot on the intermediate shaft - which I have not done yet, because mine is not a "clunk" as described. Mine sounds like the clicking of the turn signal (in fact, sounds nearly identicle to the turn signal) and it sounds as though it is coming from the column, or top of the column, not from the pedal area/other side of the firewall.

I'm at a loss...
Edit, it hapens while driving period...nothing to do with bumps, or speed bumps, or turns. It happens constantly, even while in a straight line.

I actually joined this forum for this issue...i have the the same thing in my 97 TJ...there seems to be lots of thoughts on what it could be. In my case i'm quite certain it's NOT the intermediate shaft but something right behind the steering wheel...did anyone find a fix for this?

Thanks!

If you activate the turn signal is it the exact same sound?
There is no flasher unit in the JK to make this sound. The flashing of the lights is done by the computer and the computer sends power to a relay that has the sole purpose of making the click sound.
Your problem could be that the computer is sending or receiving a false signal.
(ronjenx) would be the one to ask about this

Thanks for the info, glad to know. I believe its the same sound - I will turn the signal on tomorrow and drive straight for awhile to see if it continues seperately. I'll try removing the relay as well and see if the sound persists.

I don't remember where I found the info that helped me diagnose my click but what it was was the sleeve on the intermediate shaft slid down a half inch at the firewall bearing and allowed an annoying click I could feel. I wouldnt describe it as a clunk, more like when you break a bone kinda click. I slid it back and installed a hoseclamp to stop it from sliding and fixed it. If you look under the dash at the steering shaft you will see an orange o ring, the sliding shaft should be touching it. A tap with a hammer and a 2x4 from the engine side slides it back up, hose clamp on engine side stops it from migrating. I think chrysler installs that firewall bearing bassackwards. Good luck.
