I love my '82 Renegade CJ-7 but it rides like a covered wagon. In addition to the rough ride quality, the springs or something in the suspension also makes a loud "creaking" or popping noise whenever I pull out or come to a stop which is a bit alarming. I've been reading and researching for a few weeks now and I still can't make up my mind so I'm hoping for a bit of first hand experience on the matter.
First off, will YJ Springs improve the ride quality enough to warrant the price? Or, would a high-end CJ Spring Lift ride just as well?
If going with the YJ Conversion, what is the cheapest way to accomplish it? I plan on buying a nice lift and shocks but my budget is certainly limited so I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible. I know a few places sell Conversion Kits but they're like $400 and I've read a few things that make it sound like there are far easier/cheaper ways to do it.
What YJ Lifts would you recommend that don't cost a fortune for town and highway driving? I've heard a lot of good things about Old Man Emu, Black Diamond Suspensions, and Rubicon Express. Any of those the "best" option for my scenario or is there either a better option in the same price range or a "similar" option for a cheaper price?
I currently have a 4" Rough Country CJ Lift and 33's on my Jeep. It actually gives too much clearance so as far as CJ Lifts go, I was planning on going with a 2.5" Lift instead to improve handling and ride quality. If I go with the YJ Conversion, how do the lifts compare in size? If I'm not mistaken, I have to install some type of shackles for the YJ Springs which give like 1.5" of lift on their own, right? What would be the ideal size lift for me to buy?
I don't off-road at all. This Jeep is my DD and the only "harsh" conditions it will see are the moderate Virginia winters because I baby this thing. Here are some pics of it so you can see what I mean in that it has too much lift for 33's as it currently sits so I'm just looking for a way to fit the 33's comfortably. I don't need articulation and flexibility so as long as they will clear the flares and not rub, that is perfect.
Thanks so much for the help!
