OK now its my turn......help me with the captive nuts. I am installing the big daddy steering box brace and have run into problems. First of all the problem is not with the brace, it fits perfectly. I have had to already cut off one of the old nuts because of a broken captive nut. There are 3 hols in the frame i broke one nut on removal, the previous owner broke one and one feels like it is going to break when i screw the bolt in. This happen on one of the nuts for the transfer cas crossmember and i just drilled a hole through ttop of the frame and ran a long bolt, works fine, shouldn't do this here though because i would have to drill right through the where the crossmember is welded on. I have heard that lock washers can help hold the nut in place. i could probably drill or cut the frame to get a wrench ion there but its in a bad spot on the frame to be cutting the metal. this sucks pls help

i had the EXACT same problem. honestly the easiest way to do this is to cut the cross member down the outside line of the box frame rail. then take an air hammer and break off the rivet stud and break the weld on the far drivers side ("inside" of the rail) go in and put in all new nuts, assemble the brace and then tack the nuts in there and weld a patch back on to the crossmember.

I know I am resurrecting an ancient thread, but I have this same problem on my 79 CJ 7. This has been determined to be (at least a big part of) my erratic steering, and the loose bolts on there have actually even gotten to the point where a mounting ear for one of the bolts has broken off the steering box itself.
I'm wondering what mrloadie ended up doing to remedy this problem. If I have to cut an access hole in the frame, I can do that, but if there is another way, I would prefer it.
Anyone else have any input?
