I just bought a 2000 Cherokee, and am looking for replacement door speakers. I have Pioneer 4x6 3-ways in my YJ, and they work perfectly with subwoofers, but I need some speakers that are able to generate some bass on their own since I'm not planning on subwoofers for a while. Any input is helpful and greatly appreciated.
(Also, if you have subwoofer reccomendations, please include)

I have kicker speakers front and rear. Have no bass but the vocals and highs are perfect. Sub wise I have a Rockford fosgate punch p1 10" with a crappy boss amp. Honestly I'd cut to the chase and get a 12" sub and just get a name brand amp off of amazon. The 10 I have works pretty good, but then you'll want more. A 15" would include extensive drilling and possible alternator upgrade imo so a 12" sound get the mids and hit lows better than a 10".

I have sony xplod speakers in my xj. 5 1/2" in the doors up front and 6"x9" 2-ways in boxes in the back. I'm currently working on squeezing the 6x9s in the factory sound bar, but that is quite a chore lol.

Xplod's are, I think, kind of an entry level speaker from Sony (they are pretty cheap), but I've only used that line of speakers since I put a set in my celica-supra about 6 vehicles ago. I really like them. The 6x9 2 ways that I have now sound amazing. I mean, you won't get true bass from a <10" speaker, but they do a good job.

There is no "best" speaker. Best is all relative to the listener. The best quality you'll get will probably be a sealed sub, 6.5" components amped, and sound deadened doors for the speakers. No rear speakers necessary. Personally, I have a 12" Sundown SA-12 @ 1200W and Polk MM6501s at around 150W.

What you should do to find the best speakers for you is go around to different audio stores (even Best Buy will work) and just listen to all the speakers. Figure out which ones you like the best, and buy those + a suitable amp. You should be happy.

A fun little thing you can do to improve sound quality, even with stock speakers, is use aluminum tape to seal off all of the giant holes behind the door panel, leaving just enough space for the door rods to go through. It'll seal off the rear of the speaker and will improve sound quality by a large margin.

Foam baffles behind the speaker will do this better and with less effort/time dedicated. Polyfill them if you feel they're too "small" for the speaker.

Can't say about what might be the best but I can't imagine being much happier than I have been with the Infinity Reference 6.5's I put in mine. 6032si in the doors and 6032cf in the sound bar.

I also have a 12" sub for it but haven't bothered putting it in since installing the Infinitys as the sound has been just fine. I have the factory amp though, don't know how that effects things versus standard system.

From the website

"Never has getting high-end sound in your car been easier. The Infinity Reference 6032si car speakers are the perfect solution to aftermarket speakers. With the 2 ohm voice coil, these speakers are ideal for running directly off of a headunit or for use with a aftermarket amplifier. Infinity engineers have combined the Plus One+ cone with the high roll rubber surround to help retain the integrity of the sound. The edge driven, textile dome tweeter also features a tweeter attenuation switch that will adjust from 0 to +3 dB. Get more from your audio system with the Infinity Reference 6032si.

True Four Ohm Technology

The engineers at Infinity have developed a speaker that works for all applications. The True Four Ohm Technology used in these speakers make it perfect for running directly of a headunit or with an aftermarket headunit and amplifier. All of the speakers in the Infinity Reference line feature a 2 ohm voice coil. However, when you factor in the small OEM speaker wire of most vehicles and the heating in the voice coil during use, the impedance actually seen by the amplifier will increase. Infinity has adjusted the speaker to be safely connected to any headunit."

There really isn't a best. It's a, generally, get what you pay for thing, and there are some really high-priced speakers out there. Your money is wasted on them if you're just sticking them into XJ doors with no other investments in staging, deadening, etc. You probably have a certain budget you're not willing to exceed on speakers, too.

The only thing that can be said with any authority to you right now is that round is better than oval, bigger is generally better (6.5" can fit in XJ doors), and components are usually better than 2-ways.

What are you powering them with? OEM receiver? Aftermarket receiver? Amplifier?

I'm planning on putting in the Alpine CDE143-BT (the same HU in my Wrangler) and just running door speakers straight off the HU. Sub wise, I'm not sure yet. I have a choice of putting my box that's in my Wrangler (2 10" in a bandpass box and 250W amp) or getting a new setup for the XJ.

I really like the Pioneer TS-F1634R - it has the best bass frequency. Sometimes we don't need the best. Either because we can't afford it, or we don't want to spend that much money on it, or we just can't appreciate the difference. if you are not an audiophile, you will be more than happy with these Pioneer car speakers. They won't win a prize for sound quality, but they can definitely improve your car's standard sound quality. Researching on Automobible.com doesn't mean that these door speakers are bad. On the contrary, their box has everything you need to install them, and they offer the best frequency range for bass
