Bell Housing bolts, How to get to them?

Any trick to getting the upper bell-housing bolts out? I got all of them out but two and am having a heck of a time trying to get a socket or wrench on them. They are the two on upper passenger side. I got the ones on the drivers side top.

Can I lower the tranny to get more clearance and a straighter shot at the bolts? I'm trying to use a impact driver and that is what worked on the others. Just can't get the clearance to get at them

any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the skid plate off I used 3 extensions and a ujoint and I could remove them with a 3/8ths wratchet.

Don't forget that they are external torx its either E10 or E12. Regular wrench does not work very well. You might want to replace them with regular bolts on install.

Someone else mentioned this and I can't find a Torx bolt on mine. I have two top bolts that are 19mm hex and a socket worked fine for one of them and fits the other, I just can't get a straight shot at it.

I will be lowering the tranny in the morning and see if I can get more access to them.

Have you tried to access them from inside the jeep through the shifter hole ? Should take about a 10" or 12" extension. Wear gloves if you can go this route. My socket slipped and the jeep won on that one.

This... I found it really easy to get to mine from the inside.

I used a 12 pt as well, I think it was a 7/16's.

Well, I got all the bolts out and the motor is on the floor! Dropping the tranny down was the trick. I was able to get in with a socket and an impact driver. And it was a 18mm socket, hex head bolt. I got lucky that po replaced the Torx. I can see that being another big hassle!

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. I'll probably have another ton of questions as I start putting my other engine together.

a 12pt. socket will work on the torx head. you dont need a special socket.

another thing that helps is to hook the engine hoist up and pull the passenger side motor mount off. then the engine will drop down a couple inches and make getting at that bolt less of a pain.

I did this trick and it did help but for me not enought to get the top bolt. Thats where dropping the tranny help alot.

Only the 4.0 uses the torx bolts on the top, the 2.5 uses regular hex bolts. Just FYI for anyone reading.
The OP has a 2.5, so therefore he has regular bolts.
