Alright all you TJ guys looking for some input about these 2 transmissions. I am gearing up to do a tranny swap in a month or so. I will be dropping one of these in to my 86CJ w/4.88's and 36's to replace my t176. I have done all my research as to what it will take to get them in, their gear ratios, etc. I have found a AX-15 from a 1995 w/external slave and also a NV3550 from a 2006. I can get the AX-15 for $250 next weekend and have found a 4x4 shop / wrecking yard who would even swap the ax-15 for the nv3550.

Since both of these came in TJ's I am looking for someone who has driven both in a TJ. Really just looking to know do they both shift the same or does one shift better. I have been told they are both the same as far as strength goes, true? Is there one you prefer and if so why? Any other info about differences between the 2 would be nice as well.

Thanks guys!

:cheers2:

ever think about the NGS370? just a thought.

i just read a couple threads on it but cant remember how many extras you would need to fit it in. you already have the body lift it could require, but you wouldnt need a lot of the extrical changes.

welcome to the TJ forum!
Looked at it very briefly. They do not make a adapter to the d300 tcase like they do for the ax15 and nv3550. Really dont need a 6 speed for what I do. I am super happy with my t176 but... with no overdrive and my 4.88's I have geared myself off of the interstate.

Really like my d300 and want to keep it. To get the ax or the nv in I am already having to convert over to a hydro clutch (remember us cj guys have manual linkage), clock the tcase, shorten my rear drive shaft and lengthen my front, do a little bending on the d300 shifter, and do some skid plate work.

IIRC the AX is Stronger than the NV and NGS. Can't back it up with any factual evidence or links, but I remember that was the consensus I came to when I was pondering an auto to manual swap in mine.

ic. yeah forgot about your dana 300. i would have no complaints with that. so much aftermarket support for it and gear driven.

after reading a lot about both when considering an nv3550 swap in mine, i came to the conclusion there is no point. some places say one is slightly stronger than the other, each having its own following, but all in all you could probably consider them equal (at least to the point where it wouldnt be a major upgrade if you swapped one for the other). to me personally, it would probably be which ever is cheaper or first one to come along. ive only test driven nv's so i cant say much about them, but ive heard the ax shifts a lot smoother in comparisson.

i have always heard/read that the nv3550 was a stronger trans. i have about 150000 miles on my ax and have had no problems. however, i have a couple friends that have newer tj,s with the nv, and they are noisy and randomly will pop out of gear. also, i dont think parts are readily availible for the nv if repairs are needed.

I've had both and would take the NV-3550.Both are about the same as far as strength and reliability. The AX-15's tend to have synchro troubles more. They are pretty much equal.
