2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4

9 months old, Pentastar V6

Mileage at incident 35,000 ( I drive it as my work vehicle)

Error P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire, Shuddering and stumbling at idle

Burnt Valves, Pitted Valve Seats Resulting in Complete Engine tear down and head replacement. Techs debated pulling engine to repair. Out of commission 15 days.

Opened case with Chrysler, no help, escalated to arbitration dept. Said repairing it is all they would do and if I didnt like my state lemon laws I could write my senator. (NC Lemon law states 2 yrs 24,000 k miles)

An engine torn down that deep and extensive will never be the same (you guys know that) This is a 90% highway miles engine that is defective.

Chrysler will offer nothing outside of their powertrain warranty.

My advice.. document everything you see that is strange with your Pentastar, and take it to the dealer to document, it will come in handy down the road. I have spoke to many different Jeep dealerships in the state who have had to replace many of these heads allready for the same issue. This repair requires complete dissasembly of the engine including heating up all bolts around oil pans to break seals etc etc.

PM me for more details or to speak directly.

Rebuilds

Actually in many cases the rebuild is better then the original. I have torn down and rebuilt engines from the bottom end up. I can rebuild to closer than factory tolerances for Ford, Gm and Chrysler products. No need with Porsche and BMW engines. BMW engines with 300K miles the bottom end is just broken in.

With the cylinder head(s) and manifolds a rebuild allows to do some work to match the manifolds to cylinder heads and some porting and polishing.

So a rebuild can be better then stock. In most cases it is.

Why did they do a complete teardown?

If the tech debated whether to pull the engine I can't imagine he was thinking complete teardown; I don't see how you can reasonably do a "complete teardown" without pulling the engine..

Just kinda wondering, 'cuz if all they did was yank the heads, then the engine hasn't "been torn down that deep"..

I agree with Dave2002. It can sometimes come out better. I had to pull the head off my 98 TJ. I did all the work myself, and torqued the head bolts down to factory specs, and it actually ran smoother afterwards than it ever did.

As long as the mechanics aren't complete morons, you shouldn't be too worried. I'd be more worried about them scratching/denting the fenders while working on the motor. Good luck.

Sorry to hear this, very disappointing and I'm sure you're discouraged. I would be too. Hopefully the rebuild goes well and everything is taken care of for you.

For the rest of us - did you have any trouble, noises, knocking, warning lights, etc. before this or did it just happen all of the sudden? I hate reading these stories because it makes all of the rest of us wonder if we're next.

Maine- I know I dont mean to scare you but I was on my 5th oil change I believe, all done at the Dealerships and one day while driving out of a parking lot the check engine light came on. I took it straight in and they ran the code and it was P0304, reset, on my way.

Next day sitting at stoplight, starts stumbling slightly and light comes on, take it straight in, same code. They call chrysler who say they need to do compression leak down test. but need special adapter that is in shortage and has to be ordered.

Finnally comes in and result is 60% loss of compression in that cylindar.

My biggest worry is what caused the valves to wear prematurely? What caused them to pit? Running too lean/hot? is the passenger side head the next to be repaired??

Wow, that really sucks. I can't believe it just happened all of the sudden like that. Best of luck with the fix. There have been a lot of these threads relating to 12' JK Pentastars but I really didn't think the '11 Grand Cherokees were in the same boat. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. At least yours occurred at 35k - 1,000 miles more and they probably wouldn't have done s**t to help you.

First, I'm sorry to hear anyone having a problem on a young engine. However, if you saw how the engine was originally mass-produced (mfr builders pumping them out as fast as they can) you might reconsider that a rebuild will never be the same when as others stated it can and probably will actually be better.

While this sucks and i hate to hear anybody going through this. But, Chrysler is doing what they should and I don't see how this is a disaster. These things happen and that's why there are warranties. And there is no reason to think that rebuilt motors are never the same, actually isn't that what you want as this one had issues:laugh:

Well to be honest with you something went horribly wrong in short order.. Only one cyclinder had an issue? But back to the warranty issue, they don't have to replace the engine to fix your issue. The warranty clearly states they will repair or replaced failed components. Your entire engine did not fail. You should have been entitled to a loaner car but again that varies based on warrantys. If you had extended warranty maybe that would buy you more. You still have the 6 year 100,000 mile power train warranty so I don't think you will suffer on that end. Problem is when we are inconvenienced we all seem to think we are entitled. Sorry but the dealer sounds like they fixed the issue. If anything the time it took is a bit excessive but.... it is now fixed. Did you ask what took so long?? perhaps they had to wait on parts??
