1997 Grand Cherokee BCM reprogramming?

My issue is that the BCM (Body Control Module) on my 97 zj was fried so when I got a new one and plugged it in, the jeep would start and die immediately because of a built in security measure. After some digging around I realized that I have to reprogram it some how and there are only a few options to fix my issue:

Option a. Get the BCM reprogrammed by a dealership or mechanic (I called 2 mechanics and they both dont know what to do with it) the dealerships all say that they dont have the tool they use to reprogram these old modules with (DRB scan tool I think he called it, or was it DRV? DRT?) or they just dont work on cars this old.

Option b. Get my own scan tool and reprogram it myself (Doubt it)

Option c. I've heard that if the VIN programmed in the BCM doesn't match the VIN programmed in the ECM the car won't start so if you take the BCM and ECM from a ZJ with all the same options mine has and plug them both in it should work. I seriously doubt this happening because I dont live near any junkyards, plus its an orivs and there arent that many out there.

Is there any other option I have that I don't know about? Is there a way I can just disable the security system myself?
any reply is appreciated

Thank you

A) yes, sorta. The dealer tool is a DRB, specifically a DRB3, and many dealers don't like to admit they still have one even if they do.
B) nope, it's a bit more involved that just the scanner
C) also no! the zj pcm/bcm do not care about the VIN that is programmed into one matching the VIN programmed into the other.

It sounds like you started with a non-security jeep and have now enabled security in the PCM?

I'm not sure what the PCM is, but i'm almost certain my jeep is security because it came with a fob and has a red light indicating security. There is a guy upstate who says he has a scanner but he says the BCM may not be the only issue and something else may be at fault which caused the original BCM to fry.

I took it to a mechanic to determine where a parasitic draw was coming from, I knew it had something to do with the BCM because pulling out fuse #7 seemed to stop the power draw. He told me the BCM was fried and I'd need to get a knew one, never even mentioning that I'd have to find someone to reprogram the new one as well.

agree no vin in zj bcm

your issue is vtss (the bcm had vtss and now your pcm has its previously sleeping vtss programing activated)

you can add an intermittent switch to ground the vtss disarm wire to the bcm and if you ground it after entry your engine will start and run

don't do a continuous ground or it will keep interior lights on and drain battery

Have you tried the FOB? It should still work fine as it's tied to the Passenger Door Module. It may also need to be started 20 times for the things to get back in sync. Fuse 7 goes to a few more things than the BCM also, the PCM is one, Powertrain Control Module under the hood, aka engine and transmission computer.

Ya, parasitic draw on fuse 7 is almost never the fault of the BCM itself. Usually it's some other component in the jeep that is keeping the BCM from sleeping.

Yes, grounding the "yellow purple" on a BCM jeep will cause issues, like high parasitic draw from the BCM never sleeping and the interior lights staying on.

Make sure you've done the thing RDC mentioned, it may take a silly number of tries to get the BCM and PCM to sync.

it may take up to 20 starts for a BCM programed with VTSS to awaken/activate that feature in the pcm but you already did as that is what shuts off engine after a second or 2 (VTSS being active in PCM and armed)
no number of starts with any BCM (with or without VTSS programing) will reverse the PCM VTSS activation

could be other way around
started with vtss vehicle and with pcm having received an arm signal swapped to no vtss bcm which could not send disarm signal to the pcm
if so all he needs to do is put back original bcm disarm then ground out ccd bus while he removes old and reconnects new non vtss bcm then und ground out ccd bus and system will stay unarmed as in horror story link I previously posted

build sheet should tell the tale

I'm not sure if that's an option because the original BCM was discarded by the people who gave me a new BCM. Do you think I could just bypass the immobilizer by grounding the purple/yellow wire and install a toggle switch on the wire so I can ground and reground the wire with a flip of a switch because it would drain the battery otherwise.

Overall it makes really no difference which one you pick, as long as it's for a 96-98. The VTSS option is the main thing that needs to match whatever your Jeep originally had, but you can't tell if that option is enabled from the serial number or not, and even if you could, it could have had that option turned on or off at some point in the last 30 years. The mileage displayed will also change based on whatever the 'new' BCM mileage is.

What is wrong with your BCM?
