Hello, I have recently bought a 1944 willys military jeep, and it is only a three speed. The jeep only does about 40, whereas the road i live on is highway-like with people doing usually around 65. I was wondering if there was any way i could convert it from a three speed to a four or maybe five speed? thanks for your help, Greg

Congratulations on your "new" Jeep. I know I am dating myself but that's the type of Jeep I learned to drive on. I think you will find that the final gear ratio of the three speed will be 1:1. If you want to go faster, the cheapest route might be to re-gear, but I don't even know if you can get gear sets. I cannot recall the gear ratio that you have but I'll bet it's over 5:1. As to putting in an overdrive transmission you might check with advance adapters for help.

Both Saturn and Warn build an overdrive that simply bolts on the back of the D18 t case. Saturn's can be purchased new while both can be found used. There are a number of different bull gear tooth/spline counts so be sure to get the right one. A big outlet for these units is HERM THE OVERDRIVE GUY. do a search and contact him. This is your most viable upgrade if you plan on keeping the L four motor. Seriously, these Jeeps were built as SUV's(slow utility vehicle). 55 is tops in my book without major front end and brake work. Even then, the short wheelbase can be a tad tricky in a sticky situation.

Your low hp engine and 9" brakes will hold you back after an overdrive. If you can get up to 55 and hold it I would be surprised. If you want to go fast you'll need a lot modifications to the brake system and the drivetrain. If speed is important it might be easier to buy a newer Jeep. Just leave earlier and stay in the slow lane. All that said, what are your plans for the Jeep? Modify or restore?

yea, 2A's are not speedy. I inherited my father's '47 2A and I remember driving from Upton, MA to Cape Cod(Falmouth, MA) on I-495 in the slow lane, doing about 45. We got all sorts of crazy looks from people. Mine isn't on the road right now, as I am having trouble finding time to get it up and running again. Good luck.
