As you can see here I am looking to swap out my 0331 head as it's probably guaranteed done for.

One concern is the dowel receiver in the newer heads here.

My idea is that I can use my newer intake on the older head and also use the old exhaust manifold. I have an older engine of unknown condition or origin. With it I have the said head, manifold, and the down pipe. Thinking of omitting the post O2 sensors and adding an additional bung (or two if needed) for the two pre O2 sensors. Then the down pipe welded or have a flange of some type installed.

Will the rocker cover on the 0331 fit on the 7120? From my understanding, the 7120 uses a cork gasket while the 0331 uses the superior rubber gasket. Are the covers head dependent? Suppose that's a better way to ask.

Thoughts on this? Input? Im crazy for even attempting this?

Decided after much research, it will work just fine. I will only be using the exhaust manifold, complete head, and down pipe. All else will remain on my engine, including the valve cover. I am making progress, however, I'm running into issues;

  • I have no idea what socket I need for the head. It's a strange multipoint.
  • How am I supposed to remove the intake manifold bolts? Each bolt I try, nothing fits, shallow socket, wrench, all hit the manifold! Is there a special tool for this too?

I saw a few swap videos on YouTube that explain the tools required. The head bolts are 12 point right? Hardware stores should carry them.

If you Google "jeep 4.0 head bolts forum" you'll come up with a lot of threads.
