Replacing my 258, t150, Dana 20 in my 1979 CJ5 with this complete setup (258, t176, Dana 300) from a 1980 CJ5.

Question.
Will I need to alter anything besides possibly the driveshafts?

Driveshafts for sure. Transmission cross member will likely be in a different set of holes. Trans tunnel cover will need to be modified for different shifter locations. Maybe a few other minor things that I'm not thinking of.

Should be pretty straight forward.

If your t176 has the same shifter as my 1983, you'll need to trim your tub opening and get (or make) a trans tunnel cover. I replaced my tub with an aftermarket one and it had the tunnel opening precut for the t150 and other transmissions that we more centered. Here are some pics of where I needed to trim. Good luck with the swap!

I sure appreciate this info.
I’m trying to look at everything that’ll be needed for an easy swap.
Thanks

Renegade...did you swap a bent shifter stick on your T176? Mine, and all others ive seen, are straight stick but I dont mind the idea of not having to feel like im gonna punch the dash going into 1st or 4th?!?! Thx

My T176 is also bent. I've never seen a straight one?

Mines the stock shifter (I assume since the trans tunnel cover and boot all line up). Maybe it was the 1983 model year or mine being a base model that had the bent shifter. I kind of like it, it tucks in close to the driver and doesn't have too long of throws. The T150 in my 79 CJ7 had a long straight shifter and 2nd gear (up to the dash) felt like a long throw. Did enjoy the T150 tho, the ratios were good and the shifts were solid.
