If you care or need to know the engine year, remove one of the valve covers and you will find a serial number you can google. They were year specific. Unless of course the heads are not original to the block
AMC V8s have no serial numbers on the heads that indicate the engine year. They came with a metal tag that was screwed to the passenger side valve cover. That tag can be decoded to determine the engine manufacturing date.

Unfortunately, the OP's engine has aftermarket valve covers, so the best he can do is determine a range of years based on a few changes that were made over time.

Actually Matt, I did find one on my 360 heads as I was missing the metal tag you show - I have aftermarket covers. My casting in the head was specific to 1978 only. Had a pic of it, but no longer in my gallery as I got the info I needed. You can google AMC HEAD CASTING NUMBERS for the head info, including year of manufature. EDIT - found casting # pic

That is true for certain model years, but not all. For example, a head with a 323 3344 cast could have been built from 1979-1984. Here's a chart for future reference.

Ok, fair enough. Mine turned out to be year specific for 78 only, so I was only looking for that casting number. Helped with ordering correct parts, in my case anyway. Thanks for clarifying.

I have a1978 Jeep CJ7 that states Limited and 360 V8 on the side Drivers Side.
I am trying to see by VIN what it might be worth and if the 360 V8 is an original engine option for that year or not.
Just any information about CJ7's would be good. A group close to me or to go here or there and find build sheets or anything that can increase my knowledge about this vehicle.

I can join other forums more specific to the CJ7 if I can find them but cant see anything in particular.

Perhaps build sheet as to what should be original equipment.
Like, for example, the diamond plating on the rear quarters, if this is original or added on.
I am in the Idaho Falls area.
AMC put the 304 and 360 engines in the CJ models. I had a 73 CJ5 with the 304 but I knew people and had friends who had the 360 in their Jeeps.

Nope! Jeep NEVER put a 360 in a Jeep CJ model, it had to have been swapped in after.

They never came with Chevy or Ford engines either, but they did have Buick and Rambler engines!
But they did have a GM engine, and a Renault and an Isuzu. And that is just the ones assembled in Toledo!!!

Yeah, the iron Duke was a Chevy, but it doesn't qualify as an engine.

WE forgot Fiat too!
Hey now! I rocked an Iron Duke and its 4 lightening tubes of doom in my first flattie, that thing crushed it with 5.38s... in the 0-18 MPH range!
