Hey guys.

Grew up owning a CJ7 and a YJ. Now looking at building a TJ with and for my daughter. (I'll post more on the build plans later.) She plays on the high school golf team and needs to keep her clubs secured while in school before heading to the course. I'm looking for something other than hiding them under a blanket or tonneau cover. I've got access to fabrication equipment, so looking to build something that would be functional, secure, easy to use and still look good while the top is off. I'm hoping for a hard top so this may only need to be a solution for the summer. I've got to solve this issue before I bite the bullet on the Jeep idea as this project is DOA if I can't make this work.

First off, has anyone seen any cool fabrications done for this problem?

Here are the couple of ideas I'm thinking about:
1. Horizontal roll cage mount: This would utilize a heavy duty off-the-shelf SKB golf club hard case like the one pictured below. That case is 52" long, so I'm a little worried about whether or not it would fit horizontally without sticking way out the back or blocking the door. If that would fit, I could fab up some brackets to hold the case while still allowing it to open/close and be locked. The only disadvantage to this is interference with a soft top, but quick removal may be an option. Going up on top of the roll cage gives me more room for length, but may make it difficult for access. That would work nice if I needed to mount another box for a friend though. I'd love to be able to keep the backseat usable if possible. What about behind the driver and passenger seat?

2. Vertical on the rear: This could be a simple hitch mounted deal, but I would prefer to put something attached to the spare tire mount. Don't know if that will be stock or have an aftermarket version, but I could make that happen if needed. This mount would have two options:
2a: Mount the same SKB hard case vertically
2b: Fabricate my own setup: I'm imagining something that you slide your clubs up inside to fully cover the top of the bag and prevent the clubs from being stolen. Then something on the bottom like a shelf that holds the bag securely up into the top mount. I could use a locking strap to keep it in place or make a hinging curved bracket to wrap around the bag and put a lock on the setup. The only disadvantage with this one is the exposed bag could result in stolen golf balls, etc. and it would also be exposed more to the elements.
The other downside to the rear mount is just weather and driving around in possible rain or even snow could make a real mess with the tires kicking up stuff onto the setup. Unfortunately girls play golf in the spring and the weather is often crummy.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or ideas.

Have you considered simply bolting a lockable luggage clasp to the case itself and then having a chain bolted to the jeep interior? My wife does something similar for her electronic equipment she brings from school to school. The box containing the valuables is locked shut and it is chained to the vehicle floor. If it isn't easily removed most would be thieves won't bother with it.

Not fancy, but effective.

I think that's my last resort. Certainly much less work, but gotta take the case in out out.

I have a hardtop on my Jeep and I always just threw my clubs in the back with the seat folded up and threw a cover over them. Never had any problems parking at school, but I also don't live in a terrible area for theft.
We live in a good area and I'm pretty sure a cover over the back and the clubs underneath would be fine. I'm kind of just looking for a fun project like this to make something really cool and trick for her.

Yeah, sounds like fun. Only bad thing golf clubs and the bag are just to long and big and they barley lay across the back seat and have to lay at an angle with the back seat folded down. Then add a bulky case to that. With the back seat in about all you can do is toss them in there and chain them up. Take the back seat out and you got options. Sounds like your up for it though. Prove me wrong.

I'm pretty stubborn, so I'll have to try! Thanks for the feedback. Locking a case and using a cable isn't a deal breaker, so I guess it's time to start shopping for the jeep. I'll get a new thread started for that.

What would really bad *** is a sweet roof rack with the hard case bolted to it and a ladder. I think Gobi makes one??? Might only be for a jk. I don't know. Might be a way to get a swinging tire carrier with cargo and attach it behind the sore tire. I love golf, I would like to see what you come up with.

I hate to even say it but 4 door jk. Boooooo but it would probably work.

That would be sweet. I like the safari look on some of the jeeps and the big rack would be a cool way to do it. I'm going to come up with something trick. I would love to get her a 4 door JK, but the budget on this build is around $10k and I need around $14k to even get into a used 4 door.

Do you need to keep the spare tire?

If not you could go with something like the Poison Spyder tire carrier but made to cradle the golf case as opposed to the tire.

Or why not just go simple? Use a receiver basket and stand the gold case up and tether it to the spare tire. You could make a custom basket just big enough for the case.

I like that idea! I don't mind adding a little length and that is probably the best place for easy access. A basket would be perfect using the case to hold the clubs.

With a crappy engine at that.

I know you said you would like to keep the back seat but if you consider getting rid of it you could build something like I did. Enables me to have 2 tiers of storage, the bottom half being lockable. I am able to lock up all of my gear, tools, and any kind of gear like camping or shooting equipment. I built it out of treated 3/4" Plywood and various brackets. If you are interested, or anyone for that matter, in this build, I can go into a little more detail but it sounds like you are fairly stuck on keeping the backseat. Just another option!!!
