The research I did doesn't answer what I have found.
I see that the TorqueFlight Automatic 999 was use behind the inline 6 in the Wranglers and the late CJs before it. I see that an AW4 is used in the cherokee behind the In line 6 for 87 on. Both used the 231 t case. I also see were people say the dana 300 t case will bolt up to the TF99.9 (of course in the CJ as they used the 300). Don't read that it bolts up to the AW4. Ok my confusion and question. I had the AW4 with a 231 from a 89 XJ and my dana 300 would not bolt up to it (I think it was the splines or shaft size). I now have a TF999 and 231 from an 87 YJ (yes, its a 231, not a 206) and before I take it off and get all messy, what gives? meaning where is the difference in the component matching? The 4.2 and 4.0 have a standard bolt pattern and differnt transmissions have this style front to bolt to them....I see the 904 is the same as a 999 but with the bell housing pattern to match the 4cyl engines, but does the 231 come in different versions to match the different transmissions OR are the output shafts of these Jeep transmissions the same to match to a standard 231 case? If so, why didn't my XJ unit work? Anybody got a bunch of 231 knowledge to share??

not sure about the 300's bolt pattern, but i know the early model AW4 uses a short output 21 spline shaft like the AX-5 found behind the 4 cyl YJ. after 1990 they went to a 23 spline like the AX-15. the TF999 always had a 23 spline output which is why your case wouldn't bolt up to the AW4. it should bolt to the 87's TF though. you should be able to tell by looking at the bolt patterns and measuring, but all the clocking rings i've seen have the similar 6 bolt ring pattern for the 300 that all the NP/NV cases share. keep in mind though that you'll have to flip the 300 in order to get it to work with the driver side drop of the front axle, but i'm sure you already knew that

all you need to put a D300 to a 999 is a clocking ring. Or so I was told by the techs at A.A.

Your right, When I went with the 231 for my gear box I need the 23 spline one, which is the same pattern as the Dana 300. Doug

theres the link for the aw4 to the 300.

another thing, the 300 is a pass side drop and the 231 is driver side drop. the only flip kit i found that looks complete is the down east offroad one, $560 shipped from dc4wd.
i was going to run the short dana 300 i have behind the 4.3/700r4 i have installed in the yj, maybe next year..... so looked into lots of options for it.

the 300 is a 23 spline input btw.
good luck!

This is OK if you use the D300 the right way up, but if you want to flip it, that clocking ring won't work. You need to drag two or three holes if you use the standard clocking ring, but if you go to NOVAK ADAPTERS, you can get an adapter that's specifically designed for that application. Read THIS, it also has some info on the AW4 that might be of interest.

I'm using the Novak Flipped Adapter between an AX15 and D300 - fits great.
