I have an 89 YJ with an AC unit that is to say the least not needed and unused. I pop the top first chance and put it back after I start getting funny looks when I head for the woods in my fall camoes. Question is how hard is the ac unit to remove and can someone direct me to anything that has been published on the how-to as well as converting the compressor so it can be used to air tires, etc. Thanks in advance

I'll leave the OBA portion for others, but the unit itself is easy to remove. Its just held by some screws on the dash and a bracket on the blower motor.

Pull those things, disconnnect the blower plug, then disconnect the two (IIRC) hoses runing to the evap in the unit and you can pull it out of the Jeep.

I'm in touch with the emotion of the OP. My a/c is getting yanked in the spring to make better room for a CB and to relocate the cigarette lighter (AKA cell phone charging port) from under the column to under the stereo (where it should be).

While replacing the heater core last weekend, I had to drop the a/c duct work to access the heater control cables and allow room to get the heater duct out of the way.

Here's what I did:

1. Drop a/c duct work (5 sheet metal screws)
2. Disconnect compressor lines (adjustable pliers or large crescent wrench)
3. Disconnect compressor lines at compressor and evaporator (adjustable pliers or large crescent wrench)
4. Pull tubing back through firewall and remove from inside of tub
5. Cut and cap power line from wiring harness to compressor (I did this on the engine bay side. 1 18awg wire)
6. Disconnect wiring harnesses, lace and re-zip tie under dash
7. Have a nice day

Total time was about 45 minutes. I left the compressor in place as well as the evaporator.

I pulled everything but the compressor and sold it for $150. I then took that $150 and built my OBA system. WARNING, once you put an OBA system in your Jeep, everyone will want to use it. I was the first in my club to do it and after my first trail run with it I ended up filling 24 33-35" tires. That first time I used it found that the air coming out is too hot for PVC air hose.

Dude i live in florida, I would love to have that A/c you are getting rid of!
I've got the duct work, evaporator and blower. I'm keeping the compressor. I'm also keeping the climate control unit. Not sure how valuable this would be to someone.

If you remove the "climate control unit" (no more A/C) it can be replaced with one that controls the heat only?

:cheers2:

Ahh i thought you were just keeping the compressor. oh well.
Yeah, and half the directional vents on the a/c duct work are cracked. Hence my hesitation in wanting to sell it. I know there's a value there, but.......

I just bought an under dash unit and compressor. So will need custom lines (i have an SBC), condensor, hi/lo pressure switch and the dryer. Do you have any of that for sale? Also anything else that you are pulling that i cant think of.:D
