I have this strange groaning/whining noise that appears when I am turning the Jeep (2004 Sahara) either to the left or right. Does not make any noise when driving straight. It is a loud noise. Have no idea what it could be. It is more noticeable when turning slowly. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks!

Power steering fluid is low

my $.02

Does it sound like Chewbacca? Mine did that when turning. There is a rubber grommet where your steering shaft goes through the firewall. work your lubricant of choice between the steering shaft and this grommet. May not be what it is but I do know it is a very common issue for Jeep owners.

Edit - To say that if it is the grommet it is completely harmless. Many Jeep owners grow to know and love their Jeep Wookie.

x2 on this suggestion, had the same problem on my 98. Fixed with a shot of white lithium grease.

Last week, I bought an '04 TJ "X" and it has a similar problem... although it's a bit inconsistent. It groans during slow-speed turns (both L and R), but ONLY if I've been driving the Jeep for a while. No noise when driving straight, and the noise is louder on slower turns. If the Jeep has been sitting for an hour or two before I drive it, there is no noise during turns at any speed. The groans are loudest after I've been driving at freeway speed... after exiting, the groaning almost becomes a popping sound during a slow turn.

The PS fluid level is fine... I've checked it a few times. I've jacked up the front end and tried to 'rock' the wheels back/forth (checking for u-joint play), but they seem fine. The Jeep drives straight & true... no shimmies or wandering at any speed. Stock wheels & suspension (no lift... yet).

I will try the lithium lube on the steering wheel grommet (at the firewall), but it seems my symptoms are more than just a grommet needing lubrication. I sure hope I'm wrong. In the meantime, I'd welcome any ideas for other things I can/should inspect. Thx

Same story here, on my '97, but what gets me, is my P/S pump leaks, but the fluids are fine? I think my jeep might be crying

I just bought my 01 jeep cherokee and before i signed papers they told me this sound was a carrier bearing? sounded like a wheel bearing when turning during test drive but will have to see when i pick it up tomorrow..wish me luck

since nobody came back to update, does anyone know what this could be? i just bought an 06 with this exact problem. the noise is only noticeable after the jeep is good and warmed up.

I too gave the tires a good shaking and noticed no movement. it almost sounds as if there is some resistance somewhere. I'm about to lose it with this thing:confused:

Seems like no one suggested checking your differential gears. My rig was making horrible groaning and grinding noises only when turning. Pulled my rear diff cover to find busted spider gears. The moaning was being caused by shot carrier bearings.

i'll try and look at it tomorrow, gives me an excuse to change the diff fluid. But if that was the case, wouldnt i get the noise all the time? i only get the noise after a bit of driving on the highway, when things get hot. It doesn't appear when cruising around town though, which has me perplexed.

i second that...even tho this is an old post...i'm also having a hard time pin pointing the problem...need suggestions!:cheers2:

Groaning noise while turning Hope This Helps!

So I went mudding and immediately my TJ starting making creaking suspension noises and noises when turning. The rivers here in AK are loaded with fine silt that gets into even the smallest places. I found three causes.
1- Sway bar rubber bushings up on the bumper were loaded with dirt
2- The front lower shock bushing were loaded with dirt

and the biggest loudest cuplrit:
3-Frozen HEIM joint in the aftermarket adjustable track bar.

1 and 2 were easy fixes. Cleaned as best I could and lubricated with appropriate grease

Number 3 was a little more challenging. I tried soaking the joint with PB Blaster and manually working the ball.No Go!
Then I remembered an old trick from somewhere. I unbolted the end from the bar and boiled it for about 20 minutes. The heat and the bubbling water carry all the gunk and particles from the ball/socket. Reinstall and good to go.

Here is generic pic of the HEIM joint Im talking about. Good Luck!

I am having this same problem. Bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and when I turn hard left it whines. I took it in when I first got it because I figured it was a wheel bearing. It was not. In fact, they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Was also not the power steering. The suggestion was maybe the differential needed to be replaced. I decided to wait this one out and noticed that now it is winter and it whines less and sometimes not at all when I turn. Not sure how that's significant but its a fact. Hope to hear from someone who has figured this out.
