I've had the hole drilled in my cap for 2 years now. Like Tenn said, just a hole deep enough to puncture the outer plastic is all you need. I've never had a code pop up on my Jeep yet (knock on wood!) and it's going on 10 model years old now. It's still relatively low miles at 62k though. Maybe heating and cooling cycles wear out the o-ring? Now you've got me wondering if I shouldn't go pick up a new cap! It's never seen the inside of a garage and sits out in all sorts of weather conditions. Right now it's covered in snow and in the teens outside, summer it can see temps upper 90's with humidity that would make the Devil himself break out in a sweat.

Quick question though. Do you guys get that air sucking sound when you break your caps open to put in gas? Even on my old 81 Yota 4x4 I get that sound, but I've never heard it on the Jeep. I don't know how else to describe the sound other than it sounds like you're breaking a pressure seal and air is escaping.

I've never noticed it on the YJ. My '90 GMC full size makes that sound.... '96 T-Bird does also.

I don't recall ever hearing the air sucking thing when removing the cap. I wonder if my o-rings go bad because I'm in a sandy dirty dry desert environment. Maybe the dry air and dust take its toll on rubber. My jeep sleeps in my garage every night but is parked in the sun every day. Each time I've gotten a check engine light I have taken the o-ring off and cleaned it and flipped it over and that seams to make it last 6 months to a year longer, but then I get the light again. A new cap is the final solution. Just installed my 3rd one last week.

For that year and type of jeep, just take the jeep out to the desert. You will also need a grenade or rocket launcher. USE CAUTION, stand back about 1000 feet and aim at the bad cap. I can assure you this will fix the problem and you wont need screw drivers and monkey wrenches. again use caution, hope this helps.

I had my locking cap break as well while on a road trip. There happened to be a dealer 10 miles away so I took to them. They broke it off and sent me to a local auto parts store to buy a non-locking cap for a few dollars. The OEM locking cap was something like $75.

Good information. Thanks. And also, Congrats on winning the site for the new Barreta MFG location!!!!
HOLY CRAP ...YES!! :D:D :cheers2::cheers2: Heck I need to watch the news more often!! Wow in my backyard almost and I didn't realize it . That is about 2 miles from where I live. I've got a sweet Baretta, Ruger, Winchester, Marlin ... etc .. etc .. well, you get the point .. :highfive:. Wonder if they will need an IT person! oo oo me me me .. LOL

It would be cool to work there, but it would be hard to get my job done cause I'd wanna be in the R & D department testing the product. LOL. I used to work about 200 yards from the location they are buying.

You very welcome and glad the little video was informative. Thanks for checking my video!

The screwdriver trick worked! I used a nail and had to hammer it vigorously to break the cap surface. Then the cap opened right up! Thank you so much for the suggestion. I too was running out of gas.
Glad it worked for you! Welcome to JeepForum :cheers2:

I'm not buying another one until I drive off and forget mine. Haven't done it yet with this Jeep, but have with others in the past. I know one thing, if I buy another one, it won't have that stupid lock in it!
Out of curiosity .. about what part of Kentucky you from? Reason I ask, I have family up in the Hazard/Hindman area.
