ZJ super stereo upgrade

The last time my ZJ got a stereo 'upgrade' was in 2006 when I removed the Infinity Gold cd player and replaced it with the cd/tape combo. Since then I've been using the cassette adaptor to play music.

Well that head unit is dying, can't pick up radio and sounded like crap so I did a little upgrade!

I did some measuring to try to see which of the joying universal android auto units fit, and while the XJ guys use the 8.8, that didnt fit well in the ZJ. So I went with the 6.5" Android Octa Core 4GB unit with the volume knob.

To me it fits almost perfectly and the design meshes well with the ZJ's interior. I have a similar unit in my BMW, but that one is actually made to fit the dash and ive had NOTHING but issues with it. This joying was literally plug and play and it works great.

One thing to note: You can hook up the power antenna, but you'll notice it acts weird. Its cuz the antenna is up any time the unit is on, even when it is sleeping. So after you take the key out of the ignition, the head unit goes to sleep for a minute or two before fully shutting off, its only then the antenna goes down.

Here is the link to the unit and the bezel I got

This is the unit I got, you can also get it without buttons, i believe the screen is a little bigger. It works great

I also got this bezel, it does a decent job of covering up most of the back of the unit

yeah the bluetooth works great, 0 complains of people not hearing me.

XM? no idea. im sure you can get the XM app and just stream from the app. you can do this through the carplay/android auto streaming or just directly get the XM app on the unit and use your phone as a hotspot to connect.

For me carplay is easiest. I get in the car, start it, it automatically connects to my phone, allows me to use anything for streaming that has a a dedicated app. I use iheartradio all the time

no worries. so no fees to run it. it does connect well to the iphone, especially for carplay. I didnt bypass the factory amp and it sounds ok to me. as long as you dont turn it up too loud. I got the amp bypass harness kit but it looks like a total pain to run all new wires.

I will say the radio seems a little weak but i stream all my local radio stations via apps on carplay anyway, sounds way better.

I'll post a video of using the unit here soon

Got this exact unit and have it installed in my 5.9.
I'm now having issues with my unit sticking too far out. It doesn't come loose or wiggles, it is just not looking fine for me. From your pics it seems your radio is far more into the slot. The bezel you mentioned isn't available at the moment so I installed the HU with the bezel i used with my old 1din kenwood head unit. Maybe that's the reason for sticking out too far. Are there other bezels with that kind of "offset" to cover more of the back of the unit?

yeah something doesnt seem right. there WILL be some part of it sticking out. I actually 3d printed a black bezel to cover the white part but it doesnt stick out that far.. I'll measure it next time im in there and take some pics.

amazon and ebay have them. beware. it would be a bear to wire in. I decided to just run through the amp.

Basically the wiring kit, as i understand it, taps in at the amp and runs individual wires to each speaker. So you'd have to run wires all over the car. the kit has like 20 ft of wiring.

they accidentally sent me a second one and told me to keep it. If you want it.

Alright finally had a chance to take some pictures of my setup closely. I used my key for scale to show how far it sticks out. also remember i 3d printed a black bezel to fit over the back trim on the screen.

It sticks out on mine too. but with the black bezel it hides it. it’s not perfect but for me it works well

Thankyou, very informative. Yours indeed looks ok for a modern unit on our old bricks :smile2:

Seems that the 3d made black bezel is hiding much of the white parts of the unit. Have to look out for a bezel or for a 3D printer lol.

Thanks again for the pics and the explanations.
