my driver side upper ball joint needs replaced. but once the nut is off how do you get the knuckle off? because the lower ball joint stud goes up, and the upper ball jont stud goes down.

im like WTF??? how do u get it off so you can use the ball joint press to get it out??

i know i have one. i was thinking of someting diffrent when i posted this topic.

i like to smack the ear itself with a hammer and liet the vibrations break free the ball joints/ tie rods i dont like to use the seperator it ruins the seal then the grease leaks out.
 
If your replacing the ball joint it will come with new dust boots, no need to worry about damaging them. As for removing the wheel bearing, you dont need to for pulling the axle shaft. Just pull the 3 12 point bolts on the axle mounting plate. If you cant get the axle out just follow the pics here, from when I did mine. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=749997
 
The cv's are a lot weaker. You want the newer xj or TJ shafts with 297x joints.
