ok. early summer I got my intake hydro-dipped and i wanted a new IAT sensor. I went to stealer and they told me I had to BUY the complete intake tube to get the $4 sensor. so i just reused what I had.

FFWD

other day i am over on lxforums and come up a huge discussion about the NEW 392 IAT sensor. and how it needs the GRAY plug to work. so i dig in a bit further and realize the gray plug is exactly what I have on my 07 4.7.

so more digging and find a pic of the new sensor.....go check my intake and sensor is simialr except length.

the discussion was around the MAYBE BENEFIT of having the sensor out in the MIDDLE of the tube rarther than near the sides so as not to be affected by the heat soak of the tube itself.

I cant tell you any performance benefits but there COULD BE SOME.

but I can tell you the sensor is the same diameter and worked fine in my K&N.

MORAL OF THE STORY: IF YOU HAVE THE GRAY IAT PLUG THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU!

05149279AB 392 Chally IAT part number $3.90 plus tax at my local dodge dealer.

here is the gray plug on my 07 Jeep.

sensors side by side; new one is the longer 392 one

new sensor in the grommet. my old sensor the tab sticking out bent all the way back so sensor was shoved in to about the tab. new part has much more rigid tab so i ended up cutting it down some but not all the way.

Interesting, I just checked, my 05 5.7L has the grey plug (not sure why the plug color matters) as well.
Do you have a link to the discussion on the other forum?

Hi Robpp, just came across this, hows this mod holding up? any noticeable difference?

I did this mod. about a year and a half ago and it works great. By sampling intake air from the middle of the tube definitely reduces the intake air temp. reading sent to the PCM. Mine runs the same as ambient (on the highway) with the new Challie sensor, as indicated on my DashHawk. Before, with the short sensor, it would run ~5-10 degrees higher. Hopefully, at a minimum, it results in the PCM allowing a little more timing, because of the cooler air. The gray plug is on the 06 and later vehicles. My 05 Hemi LX won't take the Challie sensor, because the plug is different. As a result my Challie sensor for it sits on the shelf until I get to a wrecking yard and cut a gray plug off some Chrysler product and splice it onto the LX.
