I just bought a Grand Cherokee Wj 4.7 V8 2001. I am facing Whining/howling noise. When in nuetral no sound, step on the gas, then the noise come out. Getting louder everytime i step deeper on the gas. Happen also when driving..very loud whining/howling noise. But when i release my foot from the gas (even the car running fast) the noice disappear. It only come out everytime I step on the gas.. Any idea what the noise caused by? I went to the crysler dealer. Told them about the noise, they said that it is caused by the power steering pump. I doubt it because i hear the noise more like from the passenger deck.( left side ) cause my car is a right hand drive. Friend of mine said that might be caused by a leaked exhaust or manifold. Anyone any idea or experienced it before and had a fix? Thank you.

it might be a bad pulley bearing or idler bearing If it was me id take the belt off and spin all the pulleys maybe you can feel the difference in one. Can you post a video?
It sounds more like underneath the engine. Like near the transmission. I can record it and post it this weekend..it sounds very loud both outside the car and in the cabin while station and running. I doubt its the pulley or belt..

Hydraulic fan? At least it was, for a couple of people, on a recent post within the past month. Do a search, you should find it.

I doubt its the fan. The dealer said it could be the power steering pump but i doubt it because it sounds underneath the deck. Or could it be ..? I dont want to spend on something that is not sure..:(

same issue with my 2001 WJ 4.0

I think mine is in the transmission. Mine stops while on freeway and going into neutral. This weekend I am changing the fluid & filter. Next will be transfer case fluid. All fluid levels are good too

I bought my wj with that noise January 2012. Last week i decided to finally check it out, it was the tension pulley. 20$ for the part, and 3 minutes to replace. Ive never heard my wj sound so quiet, so beautiful haha.

If its a pully, take the belt off and start it. It shouldn't make that noise w/o the belt on. I highly doubt its a cv problem.

You seem to have the exact same symptoms as i did as far as noise, location, causes, etc. I would check the pulleys first.

Edit: if the noise is stronger from the passengers side, check pulleys. If noise is stronger from drivers side, check power steering pump. Hope that helps :]

Yes mine sounds like as if its in the transmission gearbox. But sometimes sound /noise can be deceiving.. Transmission and transfercase Oil is the first thing I did to solve this whinings. But it doesnt fix it..you might want to postpone oil change.. Remember that oil spec must be ATF +4 .

The noise is strong and obvious at the passenger side which is on the left side. Mine is a right hand drive. Chrysler mechanic suggest that I should have the power steering pump flushed and exchanged for new oil. So could this whining caused by this PS pump and travel so far as to enter the car interior?

I dont know if the layout under the hood is the same or different. If everything was reversed, then yes, i would say your power steering pump is bad. Also yes, you will hear the whine from the inside.

I had to do the same to mine years ago, was slight low volume whine/whistle, was the the serpentine tensioner pully.

Would like to know if tensioner bearing is worn out, there is also a whining noise correct? Does sound none stop, both when engine in stationer condition or it sounds when we step on the gas, and it will get louder and louder? Just wondering..

In the other hand, if power steering pump is worn, the said whining noise only come out if we step on the gas too? Or should the noise keep sounding as soon as the engine start and go on and on even the car no accelerating.

My case, the whining noise only happen if I step on the gas, increasing louder and louder following the pressure I put on the pedal. When car is speeding, whining noise is increSing. Like said when I hit 100km/h , when i release the gas pedal, the Whining stop. So, can you guys assume what it might be..? Thanks a lot..

Start the Jeep, put on the hand brake, open the hood. Stand in front of the car and put your hand on the throttle. Increase your throttle to increase RPM's and see if you can hear where the noise is coming from, left side or right. If idler/tensioner pulley is on side with noise, then replace that part, if noise is on side with PS pump, then that is your problem. Close hood, turn off vehicle and decide what you are going to do.

So what you mean is either the tentioners or the steering pump..ok I will check it out..thanks for the heads up. I had suspicion on the gearbox but the mechanic said not. Because sounds like as if it is in the gearbox..will update soon..:)
