Why do people put loctite on wheel lugs?

Title says it all... I don't know how many threads I have read that people say they put loctite on the wheel lugs.
I think people know that you need to recheck lugnut torque like 50 miles after installing the lugs and if they needed tightening... then recheck again until they hold torque.
The reason the lugs loosen is because the wheel "seats" in the taper of the lugnuts and it takes the wheel rolling around several times with weight on them to get them to "seat". Once the lugnuts hold their torque... they don't need to be checked unless you feel like it.
So... point is... lugnuts do NOT lose their torque from backing off the threads... the wheel finds its happy place within the 5 tapered lugnuts. STOP USING LOCTITE!!!

Why on spacers and not on the wheels? That has never made sense to me. The spacer nuts fit exactly like the wheel nuts. What dcope said about the wheel seating and the nuts needing to be tighten is true for spacers as well.

It's cheap insurance for people that worry. My DC-1 aluminum wheel lugs never stayed torqued.I would drive for a few weeks, get a bad wobble and find the lugs loose.I had to tighten them every couple weeks without Loctite. It beats losing a wheel at 75 mph.:(

Yea, spacers are the same as the wheel. Same seating process.
Wheel spacer companies only provide loctite to keep from getting sued. They know there are lazy people that will just put them on and never remove the wheel to check the spacers. Loctite will at least keep the wheel from falling off. Which means... no lawsuits.

Boobyman... there are exceptions but not many.

I thought they put loctite on to just pi$$ off the next owner?

Also why do the wrench monkeys at Sears think they work for a Nascar pit crew and put on wheels with an impact gun? Was on my mom's car, and I had to change the brakes afterwards. Took a 3 foot breaker bar and a 280lb man jumping on the end of it to break them loose. Glad she never got a flat in the time between.

Haha been there. Wait till they beat on them long enough to mess up your lugs.
