I recently got a 99 grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0L straight . I want to go through it because I don't know much about the history of it. I want to change the trans filter and fluid for good measure. the problem I have is I don't know which trans it has I crawled underneath it and cant find any markings that I can see. does anyone have other suggestions?

P.S. any other services I should do? it has 165k on it. I already done oil change and air filter.

42re is the trans,, about half way down on the link provided is some info on the 42re... I would also do the front diff (dana 30) and the rear diff (dana 35) and change the transfer case fluid....that should cover the fluids

How would you go about over filling an axle since you fill it till it runs out and that's the max you can get into it

I posted http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/transmission-identification-removal-1219327/ a couple of ways to ID the transmission, but it's likely the 42RE. The two ways are the ID plate on the transmission (pic at the link) and by contacting Chrysler.

Jeep04 - I suppose if henrygeorge was off-roading and some how determined he needed to add fluid you could overfill if you were on the side of a hill, log or rock and decided to add it there. But yeah, good point.

Trans takes atf+4
Tcase takes atf+4
Differentials take 80w-90 or 75w-140 if you tow

No need for additives in anything. You do not have varilok so just fill it up with the proper differential fluid stated above and good to go.

Agreed, watch your trans level when filling. Proper way to check is when trans fluid is warm with it in nuetral. Fluid does not cycle in park on the 42re. Fill tcase and differentials until you see fluid coming out of fill hole. No way of overfilling.
