What is the passenger dashboard screen for?

We're considering getting a Grand Cherokee 4xe and they all have an additional screen on the passenger side. What is it for? Do you just control the same stuff as the regular middle screen? I see there is an HDMI port, so I assume you need to plug your phone into that to be able to watch videos on that screen? Seems like kind of a waste when you can just watch that on your phone or a tablet or something.

Do you have a GC with one of those passenger screens, and if so do you use it at all for anything worthwhile?

I guess if it's going to come with it anyway it doesn't matter, but if it were up to me I'd rather leave that off and save a little cash, it seems to be kind of useless to me.

There are a few things you can display on that screen. You can pull up the vehicle's navigation-screen on there and watch the route (my mother enjoyed doing so on a longer trip). Next, you have access to the vehicle's built in cameras (i.e. you can look at the top/front/rear view while driving at higher speeds). Also, you can hook up Bluetooth headphones to it and listen to media (i.e. you can put a .mp4-movie on a USB-stick in the center console and watch that while driving) and, of course, you can hook up a source to the HDMI-port (i.e. Fire-stick). A fire-stick can be operated through the vehicle's hot=spot and the audio can be streamed over the speakers via Bluetooth.

On my 4xe's, I have the Rear Entertainment System with built in Fire-TV so I can use that source to watch TV on the passenger's screen without hooking anything up. It is also possible to watch TV on the front center screen while the vehicle is in "P".

Technically, you could use a phone for many of these features but it's highly uncomfortable since you would need to hold that in your hand the entire time. Putting it on the dash isn't perfect, either, because your screen would appear smaller and it may fall down as well.

I thought it was an option, not standard. I would not pay for it myself. Generally it is to keep the passenger entertained, that's it. It was an option on my 2023 Overland and I did not opt for it. Why am I paying for something I cannot use?

Yeah I can really only afford a 4xe because of the lease.. it basically shaves off all of the extra costs that get added to add in the battery, where I live the standard 4xe and I think also the Trailhawk were coming out like $50 less than the gas versions. I like the Trailhawk but that may also be too much for me, I will probably have to stick with the regular 4xe which I thought also had the passenger screen standard but maybe I was wrong. Just seems like a waste and I know my wife will hardly ever use it even on road trips. If I don't get the 4xe I would probably have to go with a Laredo or maybe Limited gas version. I like the idea of getting better gas mileage though and not having it cost $10k extra

That certainly is a huge surprise to me (well, not the $3k more - LOL!).

So looking at the website, on the MY24, it appears that only the Trailhawk 4xe and Summit Reserve 4xe have the passenger screen standard now. That would be a big surprise.
in general, there is still a lot missing on the configurators on jeep.com. On the base 4xe, it shows the passenger screen as "available" but on the configurator, the option is missing. Also, when I checked yesterday, there were only two colors available on the Trailhawk and features like the Rear Entertainment System were missing altogether.

That's very interesting - thanks for sharing!

Their current website certainly is a mess - LOL!

BTW, it appears that MY24 is not bringing any new features to the table. At one point, there were rumors about a reverse charging feature but the latest press announcements for MY24 did not mention anything. Do you see any new features or options in the order guide? I know the Trailhawk has the black wheels now.

Also, is the Rear Entertainment System still listed as well as the High Altitude Package on the Summit and Summit Reserve 4xe?

Do you mean this:

If so it is no longer offered on the current 2024 4xe.

All options are coded by 3 letter code groups and have been since I started at Chrysler back in 1976. It's easier if you know the 3 letter code. Last year there were several packages offered like 30th anniversaty package on the base model, not offered this year. Still something called (CARB STATE PACKAGE 27L) on the trailhawk and still the Reserve package on the summit, no package on Overland. They change stuff all the time and the code guides are reissued many times a year, web site often does not keep up. In the old days dealers ordered off of paper forms using the code guides and writing in the 3 letter code groups. It is how I used to order my lease cars from corporate, on paper. :) Dealers don't order this way now but they still publish the code guides and they are the bible of what can or cannot be ordered. Sometimes the guide says "Late Availability" which means you may be able to order this later or maybe never. I was part of IT support for Dealer Operations for several years in my 38 years at Chrysler.

Thanks for the inside news!

Yes, I was referring to this Package I got on my MY23s.

Shocked it's no longer available. I just went over Stellantis' press releases and compared MY23 to MY24.

Based on that, the High Altitude Package is still available BUT the Rear Entertainment System is gone indeed. That certainly was short - just a single MY - LOL!

You understand those are press releases and have nothing to do with what is actually available. I have no idea what the "High Altitude" package is. It is not in the code guides at all but most likely a marketing thing as it always was. Something for the dealers to sell. Never listed in the code guides.

Yes, that was the sticker (and photo) of my Summit Reserve I picked up 2 weeks ago.
The MSRP certainly is high but through tax-credits, discounts & rebates, I got a total of $20,000 off so it wasn't too bad.

Jeep is not the only brand where prices are going through the roof. What I did was took the MSRP, deducted the $20k and asked myself what other equally vehicle I could get for that. Honestly, I couldn't find one. Since I'm leasing my vehicles, the $20k has the bigger impact than the net price of $67k. You would actually have to find another vehicle with an MSRP of $67k AND a nice discount to get to the same monthly payment as on the $87k Jeep.

I will see what a year brings as the corporate lease is only one year (PITA really) so next July I will be shopping for a 2024. I have had a new vehicle every year for the last 30 years, meaning I have had a lot of Jeeps for one year only. The Jeep Liberty was the worst. Here is the oldest window sticker I have as I lost others before this:
