A few months ago I changed t-case fluid. Manual said to use ATF+4 so I did.
After reading the FSM and a few threads here it seems the NV245 ( pretty certain that's what I have nut build sheet doesn't say specifically)would prefer MOPAR NV245/247 transfer case fluid.

Just checked underneath and it looks like the front output seal is blown..

** When I bought it 8 months ago the t-case looked like it had a minor leak.. See pics, the film all over the case has been there since I got it but the sprayed line of grease is new..

2005 5.7 QDII

So..

How bad is ATF+4 in a NV245?

Any tips on changing the front output seal?

Thoughts?

TIA

you only have 1 avenue here. lets think POSITIVE
its been done lets see what happens.
replace the fluid and observe seal leakage and T case operation......
Tcase needs to come out to do seal SEAL-FRONT OUTPUT SHAFT

REMOVAL
The front output shaft seal cannot be serviced in the vehicle. The transfer case must be disassembled to remove the front output shaft and seal.

I agree, do a drain and fill. Drive for 100 miles and do another drain and fill. The purpose of the extra drain and fill is to eliminate the detergent rich ATF 4 from the transfer case. The transfer case has a chain, clutch, and a several gears that will retain the ATF 4 on a simple drain and fill.

Then, see if you still have a leak. The NV245 seemed more like oil than transmission fluid to me when I did mine a few weeks ago.

Mine took a little more than 2 quarts of fluid even though the Factory Service Manual said it should take 1.8 quarts. So, 5 quarts of the fluid should do fine.

I would do this procedure to eliminate the ATF 4 even if you find out later you also need to change the seal.

It also looks like the boot to your driveshaft has separated. The last photo looks like the grease sling from that side of things and may be a symptom of failing TC parts. Not trying to add salt to the wound just noticed it. I had to swap mine a few weeks ago.

Agree.

That grease would only come from the CV joint - the grease would not be in the T-case. The CV joint is a fairly straightforward repair once you get the driveshaft out of the Jeep.

I asked the local tranny shop that works on my Jeeps about the weeping seal at the front of my T-case and they said the entire thing has to come out of the vehicle and the transfer case torn down to get the seal out and put in a new one. Don't know if anyone on here has replaced the seal with the T-case still in the Jeep but if so I'd love to hear how it was done.
