Steering noise when turning the wheel

Anyone experience a noise when turning the steering wheel, could be something to do with the electric steering module?

#3 ·
Nope, not steering module but instead the suspension. There's another thread somewhere that talks about it. Basically some part of the strut or something has rubber on rubber and when it's cold it'll make a 'creaking' sound as you turn the wheel. Some have tried getting grease up into it and reported some success. Reportedly there's also a Technical Service Bulletin either released or about to be released about it....

I brought my Jeep in for several problems last week. One issue was a clicking noise whenever I accelerated and also a noise when I turned the wheel sharply. Turns out my axle boot was torn and I was leaking grease. When they corrected that issue the steering noise went away as well. You should check to see if you have the same problem. Unfortunately for me, that issue was corrected but now my ABS has errors so after being at the shop all last week, it is there again.

There is a TSB for it that came out in March and there is a recommended "fix". I have this issue and will eventually go to the dealer to try this TSB. Definitely worse when it is cold out. Sounds like there is sand or dirt in the steering when you turn.

TSB is 02-001-14

Hobie731,

If a defect is present and you are within the terms and conditions of warranty, it should be covered. If you have any questions regarding the diagnosis, be sure to speak with the Service Manager at your Jeep dealer.

This problem is pretty wide-spread. I brought my Jeep in for this problem before Christmas and they replaced the steering module. Unsurprisingly this did not fix the issue, but if that's how they want to spend their time and money - so be it. I brought the Jeep in again just before New Years and they said I need this Lubricant applied. It is now February 13th - 47 days later and the dealer is still insisting that they cannot get their hands on this lubricant due to a severe shortage. The grinding while turning is a great advertisement for the new Jeep in parking lots. It is just lubricant FFS. I am disappointed in my decision to go with Jeep. I hate hearing "I told you so" from the wife. Her X3 has less issues...........

Steering Noise.

I have had my 2014 Cherokee Limited in the shop 3x for this creaking/rubbing noise. The lubricant worked for 2 weeks and then noise came back. Tomorrow it is going in for the 4th time and they are replacing the front struts for free and said it is covered by warranty. Just wish I could return this car and get my money back. I have spent more time in the garage with this car in the last year than I did in the 15 previously total with my Toyotas and Hondas.

ivorypearlcat,
Sorry you've experienced this reoccurring issue. Please private message me your VIN and dealer so I may look further into your concern.

Ivorypearlcat, has the strut replacement completely solved the issue?

This is beyond frustrating. I've been dealing with this grinding sound for just over 4 months now. Now it's even WORSE!!!!! This is a brand new vehicle. I understand that I made a decision to buy an 'new release' product; but I didn't think that I would be given the cold shoulder when a known solution is available.

How is this problem not plastered all over the internet? Every time I call the dealer they say that none of the service departments in the area can get their hands on this stuff and I'm one among hundreds that are waiting. It's completely absurd. Are they lying to me and selling this stuff to the highest bidder or something???

I can't even pretend I am happy with this vehicle when people ask me about it, anymore. The ironic part is that we were originally so happy we were considering trading in our X3 for a Grand Cherokee. Thank God we didn't pull the trigger on that. Even worse is the fact that we paid extra for an extended warranty. I'm at my wit's end.

I've had this noise ever since buying my Trailhawk in Nov 2013. Every time I took it in for this (lost count) they'd tell me it was normal and probably the electronic steering.

When the TSB came out the dealerships told me they'd never heard of it. Finally I got an electronic copy, printed it and brought it with me. The dealership told me they don't just do TSBs because a customer asks for it. I had to literally read it to them, that's exactly what the TSB says to do. Finally they I got a dealership to do the TSB and apply the grease...

...two days later the noise was louder than ever and now it happens in all temperatures. I don't really know what to do about it now. It was so difficult to get it done the first time.

I'm at my Jeep dealership now for this. They are telling me that the required grease is on "national backorder" and that no dealership can perform this TSB.

#24 ·
Thanks to JeepCares my Trailhawk is finally getting that grease applied to the steering RIGHT NOW. Won't know if it worked until they're done, but I had no luck even getting this done until JeepCares got involved. Turns out a prior dealership did NOT do the TSB even though they told me they did and had me wait for them to complete it. I would not have known if JeepCares had not checked my Jeep's record and contacted the dealership to ask what grease they used.

#26 ·
Happy to report the steering is groan and creak free. The dealership even asked me to come back and review their work so I would have confidence that they did the job.

I've read that for others this is a temporary fix, we'll see how long it lasts on mine.

Seriously Frustrated

I bought my trail hawk brand new in February 2014 and noticed the front creak in may 2015 when I accelerate or decelerate and even more prevalent when turning the wheel to the right while accelerating while backing up. I originally brought it in to my jeep dealer may 29th and have let them have it three total times one of which was for a week while I was on vacation with my other vehicle. Each time I get it back not fixed with them stating something had been re-torqued but they still have no clue and are waiting on a possible TSB to pop up. there other suggestion was that a Chrysler engineer was to come look at it ( even though that's been promised it still has never happened) I finally got a call mid June stating that they were going to try the grease the strut mount TSB but the grease was on "national back order"... so here I sit. Waiting now nearly a month later.. This is possible the worst vehicle experience I have ever had... I am just told to sit tight until either the grease shows up or another possible TSB fix comes out. I am beyond frustrated and I also wish I had never bought this jeep to begin with which I also originally really liked at first.

Welcome to the club mate! I've been waiting since December 2014. Don't stress, I have determined the plausible cause for a tube of grease to take 8 months to get in stock! The grease base is made from the unique properties of a crude oil found only in the oil sands of Abu Dhabi. Once harvested and treated the liquid is enhanced with a soap based thickening agent native to the Greek Islands. Something about the saponification they implement. After being mixed to a roughly desired viscosity, diamond dust from South Africa is folded into the mixture by Gordon Ramsay; who is the only person on this planet that has the ability to expedite this rarely seen grease.

Or maybe Chrysler has fired all of their engineers and distributors so they could hire more Cyber Security personnel to deal with that uConnect hack.
