Does anyone have experience or knowledge of the SP precision XP1 AX15 trans? I unfortunately ran Lucas GL5 trans fluid, I have an old manual. I need my transmission rebuilt now. All the decent local shops want $1100+ to rebuild. The SP precision XP1 AX15 is $795. I’m thinking I can save the added $300 and do a clutch job at the same time, 256k miles. I’m not familiar with the SP precision XP1 AX15 so I’m looking for advice? BTW RedsMT90 going forward.

It's a rebuild with a core deposit. How much is shipping both ways?

Mine blew last weekend. I elected to go with a new AX15, the price difference, at least in my neck of the woods, was negligible, even including shipping, plus there is no core charge on a new tranny.

Is it only the synchros that are bad? Are the shops charging for removal and install? What all are they replacing?

I rebuilt my AX-15 at about 288,000 miles because 5th gear broke. I used the kit from transparts warehouse (see link below). There is a good writeup on this site and some Youtube videos. You will need a press and time. Total cost for me was $550 because I had to replace the 5th gear set, and I chipped 2nd gear and broke the main shaft collar due to carelessness. Cost should be no more than the kit if you don't break anything and find no issues with your gears.

There's a chance you will find damage to a gear when you are in there. There are cases of 5th gear failing on high mileage AX-15's. I would look the gears over carefully. My small 5th gear lost 3 teeth and the neighbors were pitted. Makes me wonder what all is replaced or inspected on remanufactured or rebuilt transmissions at a local shop. Given the cost of replacement gears, I don't think there's any way they normally replace all of the gears. Costs would be much higher.

I have not had a chance to take it to a shop for proper diagnosis. I just called around for rebuild cost, rings and bearings $1000-$1200, I can save about 300 if I pull the trans myself.
The problem is I can no longer down shift into first or third gear without RPM being below 1000 and even then it still grinds. Starting to get a little sticky with normal upshifting.
I’ve been looking at the suggested rebuild kit along with the fifth gear upgrade. Figure I can do the rebuild and a clutch job since I’m down there for half the price of the shop trans only rebuild.

Did you order from this company, if so how was the transmission?
