1997-2006 Jeep TJ Wrangler including Rubicon and Unlimited

Our new gas tank skid plate is a cover-up style skid plate that bolts over the factory skid plate. This skid plate simply bolts on right over the original so you don't have to drain your gas tank and remove it. That makes the installation a snap! Normal installation time is less than an hour. They are made from 3/16" thick steel on the bottom and sides, and come powder coated in semi-gloss black. We have one installed on our project TJ Rubicon with a D44 rear axle and it works great!

Please note that 1997-1998 TJ's will require two holes to be drilled while 2004and newer models require drilling one hole. Unlimited models require drilling of two holes.

1984-2001 Jeep XJ Cherokees

These skids are made from 3/16" thick steel on the bottom and sides, are powder coated, and are completely bolt-on. They are designed to work with hitches as you can see in the picture above left. If you don't already have a hitch you will need to provide the nut plates that fit inside the chassis. You can get them from your friendly Jeep dealer. On 1997-2001 models you'll only need the driver's side nut plate. We just got a set from our local dealer.

Please note: We've recently learned that our gas tank skid plate is not compatible with the Rusty's Offroad Hitch due to its width.

Please note that there is a difference between the 1984-1996 model and the 1997-2001 model.

The 1984-1996 models have a steel gas tank, while the 1997-2001 models have a plastic gas tank that hangs closer to the ground.

Comments: This was an interesting install especially with a hitch. I had a little problem getting the heat shield to fit right, had to do some modification. Definately a one man job, easier with two.

Comments: Skid went on easily without haveing to drop the tank, still need to put a jack under it to get the front mounts to their highest position.

Pros Made of US fabricated steel, no China OEM sheet metal.
Cons Doesn't come in colors other than black

Comments: All of the holes aligned perfectly. Still had to use power tools. Instructions had pictures for those of us who don't read so well. Large crayon sized check boxes kept track where we were in the process.

Easy install
Cons Exhaust interference

Comments: I have this skid on my 2000 XJ and this thing is burley. The install was fairly straight forward and took 40 minutes with two guy, this includes removal of the tow hitch. The only issue I encountered was interference with the stock tail pipe. With the skid in place, the tail pipe rests right against it and rattles like a freight train. Cut the pipe off right behind the muffler and added a turn down, problem solved
