I just tried to replace the factory JK door stop on my driver front door. Talk about an idiotic design! You apparently have to buy a new wiring harness that is immensely complicated to replace, as you have to remove the outer and inner door panels and unplug 3-5 electrical connectors to finish the job.

Problem is, I can't seem to get the inner panel off far enough to access the final plug that connects the power lock solenoid.

Can anyone help me on how I remove the inner door panel without breaking or losing some part inside the door?

Thanks!

Sounds like he's replacing the strap. Probably because its broken. the only solution I can come up with is instead of using a factory replacement, get some 1" webbing from your local climbing/ backpacking store. sew a loop in one end, and zip tie the other to the old wiring harness coming out of the door. total cost should be about $2.

Or an old nylon tie down strap. I had one laying around that matches perfectly. I about ten minutes of hand sewing and you're done.

Since I'll be trading in the car soon, I couldn't do the quick repair suggested. Since it doesn't sound like anyone else has encountered/attempted this repair, let me just say this was a huge pain in the tail.

You basically have undo every screw and mechanism, separate the window glass from the regulator and unscrew the door clasp from the door to get the inner panel completely free. Oh and you have cut out two little stamped access covers from the inner door panel to get the glass to release from the regulator.

Thanks Jeep/Chrysler!!!

I changed mine today, driver side complete harness/strap in 15 minutes. Remove the door panel, unplug at latch(hardest part for me) remove the plastic fasteners and it comes right off. Reinstall door panel .
I'd appreciate if would share your secret, as you don't mention any of the steps required to get the inner door panel off to access the lock mechanism plug. Popping off the cosmetic door panel is a breeze, which gives access to the first 4 of the connectors. However, you can't get to the last lock connector until you pull the inner door panel out of the door. And you can't do that until you separate the glass from the regulator and remove all the bolts and nut that holds the lock mechanism from the door. Unless there is some magic step I missed.

There was no inner panel to remove. You could remove the 2 10mm nuts attaching the door handle, but that is not needed. A friend told me that you could remove the bolts holding the door latch assembly and moved it enough to release electrical connector.
Reallynot that hard, where are you located? I dont mind helping if your close by.

You must have a different model, as I have already completed the repair and had to go through all the steps outlined. In case it wasn't clear, I have an 08(JK) Wrangler Unlimited Sahara edition.

The door panels are in two pieces, an inner and outer. The outer is the side that faces the interior and is held in place by two screws, a torx screw(behind the interior door release) and several snap rivets holding it on to the inner panel.

The inner panel seals the actual door opening and functions as a base for all the inner door hardware and components, e.g. window motor, regulator, door lock mechanism, etc. and is held on by 6+/- 10mm screws.

You can't access the lock connector without removing the inner door panel from the door.

You can't get the inner door panel off of the door without removing the glass from the regulator and the bolts(3, and one nut) which hold the lock mechanism to the door.

You can't release the window from the regulator without cutting out two covers from the inner door panel.

You absolutely can't separate the regulator from the inner door panel as an alternate approach as it is screwed on to the inner door panel from the inside of the door.

This ain't my first rodeo, yet I still had to have a mechanic friend walk me through the steps over the phone to keep me from breaking something else out of frustration. I'd include pictures, but I'm not going through this work again until the strap breaks again. And hopefully, I'll be in a Pentastar equipped model before that time! Thanks for the help, though.

Man, I feel your pain. I'm trying to replace the passenger side now and getting access to the last plug is almost impossible. Anybody got a shortcut?
If you have done all the previous steps, the removal of the last plug(door lock mechanism) should become easier. You will have to unscrew the door jam bolts(4) and then one that is accessed by an opening on the inner door panel. I seem to recall a cut-out towards the top left side of the inner door. Good luck!

Im 100% positive this isn't going in right place. If you know how to move it, plz do so. Thanks. Anyway, doors strap broke on 07 jk. I read something SOMEWHERE on here about having to replace whole door wiring harness. Yep, that's what u have to buy. Got to thinking ....dangerous. I have a Sahara with all power stuff in doors. What about an X? They come without all that. Dealer asks for Vin and then promptly tells u that it won't work. Keep in mind I only NEED the strap part. Kind of a pain getting them to understand that. Anyway the x has harness to, apparently for domelight control. The x harness was a lot cheaper than the Sahara one. What I did was whack the x harness in half and pull the strap off of it and attached it to the door. Then I cut the broken strap off of the original harness and attached the original to the new strap using zip ties at both ends. I plan on using glue or epoxy to attach it all the way if I have to. This didn't take long and I didn't have to replace the harness with sounded to be a pain. Also it doesn't matter which door side u get doing this. It might matter for front and back tho. I don't recommend cutting new strap from new harness with intention of maybe saving harness. It is only sewed on with one run of thread and will separate if you do. I got lucky and realized this before I started. It was my original plan. Hope this helps someone.

Help!!

Looking for some help replacing the door strap.

I have a 2014 JK, the strap snapped when the corner of the passenger door hit a snow bank (ice bank). The hook for the strap attached to the body bent inwards and the bar for the strap attached to the door is bent also.

I am looking to replace it with Star Fabricating Smart Strap.

Does anyone know anything about this product? Also do I need to remove the door panel in order to take off the stock strap that broke?

Any help/info will be much appreciated!! Thank you!!
