2006 Commander 5.7L Hemi. Had 'Check Gas Cap' message and check engine light. Read check engine light with code scanner, replaced gas cap with new gas cap, cleared engine code. The engine light is now gone and I have been driving it for awhile since I replaced the gas cap and cleared it. However, the 'Check Gas Cap' message keeps appearing every time I start the vehicle, and it shows up several times when driving, even if I select something else to show on the screen (such as the temperature).

All the the googling I have done, seems to show all of these people with this message but it ends up not being their gas cap. They have the persistent check engine light and check gas cap message. I just want to know how to reset the 'Check Gas Cap' message because my issue appears to have been resolved and I just do not want to keep seeing this message every time I start the vehicle.

Figured I would post a follow up in case anyone stumbles across this issue in the future.

I cleared the engine code with the code reader, but the "check gas cap message" was still present.

I pulled the battery terminal for a couple minutes and put it back on. The message was cleared. I have driven about 100 miles now and the message has not appeared.

Update: I cleared the engine code and disconnected the battery to kill the Gas Cap message.

This worked for about 5 starts and the check engine light returned. This apparently was because the battery had been disconnected.

Finally got the CEL cleared and all was well...... for about 10 starts.

Now both error messages are back.

Need to look furthur in the fuel evap system I guess.

I had the same problem on my 07 hemi. replaced the vapor leak detection pump p/n 2-71014 at Napa. $62.00.
Took longer to remove the inner splash shield. than replace the pump. Remove splash shield, disconnect the hoses and remove the evap canister with the pump. Remove pump from canister by twisting it out. Re assemble and re install. Took me about 35 min. to do it.
