Pitman Arm troubles 83 CJ7 w/ 4"lift? Need suggestions please

Hi fellow Jeeper's!

I recently added the heavy duty drag link and tie rod combo to my 83 CJ7 with a 4" lift. The pitman arm I have is the 3.5-4" drop. The problem is that the bottom of the pitman arm bumps into the tie rod so I am going to do the drag link flip.

My goal is to have the drag link and tie rod be parallel with each other so I don't get bump steer, if possible. When I put the stock pitman arm on to do the flip, there is a pitch from knuckle to pitman arm 1/2" to 1-3/4 pitch.

I am hoping someone can suggest a pitman arm between stock and the 3.5-4" one.
I would say a 1-2" drop would work.

If the after market one's don't make one specific to fit this, is there another one I can use from another vehicle? Also I added on the heavy duty power steering bracket, not sure if that is part of the problem to.

Thanks for any info. Here are some pictures to try to help explain. If you need any others, please let me know.

A YJ wrangler stock arm is about half way between a 4" drop and a flat (sock CJ) arm. You will need to notch the locating flats with a triangle file (the YJ box is keyed differently), but the task isn't difficult. I am running an XJ steering box and had to notch out a stock CJ pitman arm when I went to High steer. The job took about 10 minutes.

The stock YJ arm is the one on the bottom of the photo. The one on top is a stock XJ arm, about 4" drop on my CJ.

Flip it.

I went through all the stuff you are right now. did the drop pitman arm, then the re-indexed YJ arm, and on and on. What worked for me was a stock pitman arm, and flipping the tie rod and drag link at the knuckles. I also installed a M.O.R.E. HD steering bracket that pushed the box forward 1.25", getting the drag link/pitman arm away from the tie rod. It goes down the road quite well. Im on a 3.5 BDS lift, so the 1.5" that the YJ arm gives you might work well with he rods flipped at the knuckle (or at least the drag link)

Hi CrashOdle,

Your rig looks sharp! What shackles are those you're running? Thanks for info. The YJ Pitman arm came off yesterday with a more stout puller. When I mocked it up looks like the drag link and tie rod are going to be parallel. If it doesn't pour tonight I am going to attempt to put it together. Just looks like I will just have to raise the drag link. Crossing my fingers. Thanks again.

Thank you. The shackles are from Currie, YJ length, so 4" instead of 3" and they allow for towing. There's a forum member that makes a pretty nice shackle as well. Google Crabtree.

What are you using to flip the draglink? The goferit insert stand proud of the knuckle and you could also put an insert in the stock pitman arm and it would stand proud moving you to approx parallel. Also only an inch of angle won't produce bumpsteer as getting in and out of the jeep/jeep lean/having something loaded to one side in the rear can easily give you an inch of movement.

YJ Pitman Arm on CJ7 Draglink Flip

Hey fellow Jeep friends, just an up-date. I recently installed the YJ pitman arm to my rig. The measurement was the same as the drop pitman arm I had on there, from center to center 5.5". The turning radius seems to be turning fine, no binds. The drag link and tie rod are now parallel. Just need to take it on highway and see if there is any death wobble. I will probably get another alignment as well. The reaming of the knuckle went really well too, quick and easy. I used the cone inserts from OK4wd. Tie rod fits just right. Thank all of you who responded. Really appreciate it! I'll add some pictures with YJ pitman arm installed. Also I'll give another up-date after I take it on highway. Any questions, please feel free to touch base.

I didn't have it installed yet. I do have one now. I upgraded to a Rough Country nitro shock stabilizer. It feels like it helps a bit with death wobble. Also I have a new more stout sway bar. You can kinda of see it connected to the red drop link quick disconnects. I personally like to have one because my Jeep was all over the place. I may even put ridged drop links to help and also possibly put the Scout bar across the shackles. I would say its better to have all the help you can get with stabilizing a lifted Jeep. I do have friends that do not have either a stabilizer shock or sway bar and they feel fine with it. I would suggest having all the stabilizing components possible for the best safety.
