I am painting my CJ exterior. In general, how much automotive paint should one buy to get two coats of paint?

I used about 3/4 gallon (I bought a gallon) of single stage Omni AE to get good coverage on the whole outside (lined the inside of the tub).

I think I used about a half gallon of Omni epoxy primer... I shot a thin coat as a sealer on the scuffed tub and fenders, but used multiple thick coats on the stripped hood, grill, and windshield frame... I may have gone back and bought a 3rd quart...

I think you're safe with getting a gallon of most any brand (coverage varies with the quality of the paint)... and should have some left over. The difference in cost between 3 quarts and a full gallon is minimal.

PS. If I remember correctly, it takes about 13 rattle cans of rustoleum color to paint a scuffed CJ-7

paint amount.

If you are using base clear - 2 qts of color (2-3 coats) and a gal of clear (1-2 coats) will work(depending on coverage and how many panels you are painting) if using acrylic enamel you will want 1 gal. (2-3 coats). Dont forget reducers ,hardners, cleaning thinner and stirrers , strainers and mixing directions. also good quality paint normally covers better. good luck
