I found this useful information in the book entitled "High-Performance Jeep Cherokee XJ Builder's Guide" by Eric Zappe. All credit goes to him for compiling this information and putting out a great book. I recommend anyone pick it up even if you don't own an XJ. I took his segment about the over-sized filters and paraphrased it, put it in my own words with my own experiences below.:

This will fit 1993 and newer 4.0's with the horizontal oil filter adapter. If you have a vertical adapter you will need to convert to the horizontal type. The larger filter is about a 1/3 larger than stock and you will need to add about 1/4 quart more oil with your change. With the larger filter you get more filter media and cleaner oil for longer. I still change my oil every 4k-5k miles and have noticed a difference in the cleanliness since the switch. There is no drop in oil PSI and no price difference from the stock size filters. There are no con's in using a large filter, only pro's.

Wow thats amazing and really cool, sadly tonight I bought a small can Mopar filter for my "new" 99. :(
Being a Ford family we have half a dozen FL1A's in stock, I may go that route and put the Mopar filter on the shelf.

Mewonders if 5qts. is enough for a 4.0 with the big can ?

:rofl::laugh::rofl:mad: Moparrr

Not 100% sure because I don't whether they screw in horizontally or vertically on a WJ. The book cross references the stock #'s with the large ones and your K&N matches up so it will fit the threads, clearance might be the issue here. Also not sure how this pertains to the v8's.

L6 4.0L it mounts horizontal on the side of the block

AND WTF IS THAT FRAM DOING HERE?

Well the 4.0L is hard to kill even when abused they still seem to run.

True but 5qts does not turn in to 6 qt, more importantly oil gets thinner when it is warm

You should change your oil when your engine is at running temp. This is so all the oil drains out. If you start your jeep cold and move it 10 feet to do an oil change it has thrown cold oil all over your engine where it will stay much longer then it would if it was hot.

I have found you will get ~1 qt more oil out of a change if you do it when the motor is warm vs. cold.

I use the NAPA Gold #1068 on mine. It is bigger then the stock one. I will have to check the 1515 to see what it is.

I have never seen an oil filter plug completely up when changed at normal intervals so keeping the oil cleaner longer can only really be had if you have a by-pass setup or use a finer media type.

Nonetheless I have always run a larger filter because the bigger the volume the more soot it takes to saturate the oil. Ah yes reminds me of the double digit sump capacities that most diesels have.

Can anybody confirm that the HP-3001 K&N fits a 2000 WJ 4.0L L6

I know I brought death thread back to life, but can some one confirm that I can run longer filter, that mound on the side of the block ? its still fit ?

does your oil filter stick out of your motor or does it use the adapter?

if it sticks out the block I know for a FACT you can put a larger filter cause i run one. Hp-3001 fits the 4.0 amsoil Ea0-015 fits both add about 3/4 quart.
