I just discovered these are a thing[emoji1787].
What a time to be alive. I guess they've been around for a little while, I haven't been paying attention.

Unimog or Volvo C303/ 306 axles are way cheaper, and fairly easy to adapt to a Jeep. Availability in the USA isn't the greatest, but not a problem here across the ocean. That being said, ~10k $ for a set of four portal boxes that are supposed to be engineered to hold up on 1-ton axles isn't really that bad. Those aren't produced as massive production runs, and the desing/ machining/ etc. isn't exactly a cheap thing to do.
Set of Dynatrac Prorock axles start at around 10k $, going all the way to around 20k $. A set of junkyard kingpin D60 + 14 bolt GM is a under a grand, add portal boxes 10k $ and other stuff, and you're still well below the total price of a set of new axles - but with way better ground clearance.

We had a guy on a local forum build his own billet aluminum portal boxes, he did the whole thing from scratch. Day job as a design engineer for heavy machinery parts, CAD/ CNC work. If I remember correctly he was well over 2-3k for just the parts and blocks of aluminum for the boxes, doing all the designing and CNC machining on his own time.

wonder what the wheels cost with 8.75 BS. I was supersized they fit in at 17" wheel. At first look at the assembly i was thinking maybe 20"s. 50% gear reduction So....what gears would work for a DD/trail jeep. or does this end up on a trailer..... if they are still just 10k for 4 hubs, i bet the wheels would be 4 k or close not like 2 piece bead locks at 8.75 back space are shelf items as well..... 2.73 gear in the dif you are still rolling is like 5.46:1. crawl ratio is great but will lack top speed a lot even with say a .60 OD.

18" of dif. did not notice what tire. I am at 12" with a d44 and 37s. Run a lot of hard trails and

I cant understand what this guy is saying but if you watch his video it looks like he might have a set on his zj.

he has some interesting mods on his zj thats for sure.
Those are Volvo C303/304/306 portal axles from a 1970s Swedish light duty army vehicle. C303/306 axle differential is based on Dana30 (center section only), but they use a separate 3rd member like ie. Ford 9". With the portal gear reduction at the portal boxes, those Volvo portals handle 37"-40" tires on 3- ton trucks amazingly well.

Volvo and Unimog portal axles are fairly common across here, but they aren't by no means exactly cheap. Common price for a set of axles in good condition are anywhere between 2000-4000€ (which is about the same in US$) - and those are 40-50 year old axles.

I had a set of Unimog narrow- track portals and 42" rockers going into my project XJ, before I had to sell it years ago.
