nv3550 synchros rebuild or not?
Anyone want to read on to tell me your experiences with rebuilding a nv3550, or am I wrong to think it is wearing out.
So I've had my jeep since new in '02 and have always lived with some notchy shifting. About 2 years ago I switched to the Royal Purple stuff synchromax. It improved it some. Now two years later it has really started to act up especially when cold. 1st gear always takes some patients, no more racing off the line unless I ride my clutch while waiting in 1st gear. 2nd is usually finicky, 3rd, 4th and 5th are okay. Anyway I've read all I can stand, I know the nv3550 is prone to this. I've read lots of posts that just end up debating fluid changes, but nobody ever reports back with a rebuild being any solution. I might be being picky, I know it's a truck tranny, but man I feel like an old lady having to coasting/waiting (only a second or two) between gears on on-ramps while driving.
I am wondering if it is something I could fix myself and how much work it is. I've done all the work on my jeep and have done a couple engine swaps. I'd tackle a cam/lifter job in the 4.0, but that would be as far as I trust myself technically. Don't think I'd ever do a complete engine rebuild unless I absolutely had to. I think I could do it, just never touched a transmission. I have the FSM, but it makes things looks kind of complicated.
Other option is drop the tranny myself and take it to a shop. Or just drive the jeep there and let them do everything. I'm trying to save some coin, but don't want to screw something up.
How heavy is the tranny, just wondering how I'd get it lifted into my truck.
Any help/suggestions on this would be great.
Thanks to anyone who can chime in.
