Autozone sells their store brand PS fluid, which states that it meets MS-5931 standards. Is it okay to use that or should I be buying the more expensive MOPAR fluid? Anybody have a favorite fluid? Same question for brake fluid....
I remove fluid from the tank and refil every other oil change.RCMech said:Any quality brake fluid will do. We have Prestone and Napa brand here. I use the Mopar power steering fluid as it only takes a litre and it's not renewed often.
look for the spec number on the bottle.steve_80 said:how can i tell which PS fluid my Jeep needs?
the ms number. 5931steve_80 said:what do you mean "spec number"?
all it has to meet is the spec. A bunch of stuff meets that requirement. Locally for me it's the blue white bottle. A few auto parts stores house brands meet that spec also.steve_80 said:oh, so it doesn't have to be Mopar? I read something about the v8's have a hydraulic pump or something and needs something different?
Thats because power steering fluid and atf fluid are pretty much the same thing. I dont understand why Chrysler said not to use ATF+4 in the PS system.WiCkeDuDe said:Most dealers prefer to use atf4+. The bulletin from mopar say only to use power steering fluid. It does not have to be mopar. I have used both and seen no problem with either fluid. I run the royal purple maxez fluid in mine with no issues at all.
my personal rule of thumb is ATF based stuff for Rack-N-Pinion. And good old power steering fluid for the steering box systems.alfaitalia said:Definitely....it specifically warns against using atf in the FSM.....why risk damage to the very expensive hydro fan system just to save a few quid.

I didn't know this when I first got my Jeep and I'm pretty sure I topped it off with ATF+4. Am I screwed? I haven't had any issues at all and it's been about a year and a half. Do you all adhere to this pretty well? Any experience deviating from this? Where is the best place to buy MS5931?Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)
MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a "topping off" fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.
