Any MS-5931 compliant fluid should be fine. My dealer gives me a hefty discount so I use the Mopar.

Just checked my manual and it says "MOPAR PS Fluid PN 04883077. Do not use automatic transmission fluid"

I just called my local Jeep dealership and they said to use ATF+4....

Not sure what to believe.

all it has to meet is the spec. A bunch of stuff meets that requirement. Locally for me it's the blue white bottle. A few auto parts stores house brands meet that spec also.

 

Steve, I've been using the Walmart house brand that meets spec. So far so good. Canadian Tire has a house brand that meets spec too.

We don't have the blue/white valvoline stuff in Canada.

 

Okay cool. I went to lordco but they didn't have one that met the specs with that number. They had the other number.

I need some nv245 though for my transfer case. It's leaking out the pinion seal of something? Only mopar for that I think.

 

The 242 is just +4 ATF. U can get that while at Canadian tire.

Thats because power steering fluid and atf fluid are pretty much the same thing. I dont understand why Chrysler said not to use ATF+4 in the PS system.

 

Not true but I have not noticed problems using ATF4+. I prefer the royal purple maxez because I use that in my other cars and race car.

 

Dang guys.... Originally mopar PSF MS-5931 was the recommend part and what jeep put in the earlier WJs, later down the road jeep had a service bulletin that made ATF4 supersed the PSF But not for WJs.

System check to see what's currently in there. Gold looks like oil = PSF
Red/Pink = ATF4
Brown/Milky/Black/Clear = drain & flush system ASAP after proper flush refill with MS-5931 or compatible fluid that meets spec (I like AmsOil)

 

Also, don't mix ATF& PSF.
I used AmsOil in most places I can, it's good stuff

 

I won't use any ATF derived PS fluid in my 04 with the hydro fan setup.

 

Definitely....it specifically warns against using atf in the FSM.....why risk damage to the very expensive hydro fan system just to save a few quid.

 

The bulletin also said that atf4 does not replace ps fluid on the WJ and not to use atf4 though it does not say why.

my personal rule of thumb is ATF based stuff for Rack-N-Pinion. And good old power steering fluid for the steering box systems.

I asked for MS-5931 for a 2004 GC Grand Cherokee 6cyl at the Baton Rouge, LA dealer and was handed MS-9602, which does not state anything regarding compatibility on its label. Mopar does not show any power steering fluids at their site. I need reliable info, understanding that an incompatible fluid could cost $$$ in repairs.

 

******Supposedly****** MS9602 supersedes MS5931 reading other forums. But if we want to be literal here, then don't use it. Find one that has MS5931 spec. I'll keep digging for the supersede info

I didn't know this when I first got my Jeep and I'm pretty sure I topped it off with ATF+4. Am I screwed? I haven't had any issues at all and it's been about a year and a half. Do you all adhere to this pretty well? Any experience deviating from this? Where is the best place to buy MS5931?
