I bought my CJ (Craigslist Jeep) as a project. I am now at the point where I need to replace my B&M floor shifter and am looking at the Lokar. Does anyone here have an image or two with the Lokar shifter installed so I can get an idea where it will be approximately and which length of shifter to buy.

This may be too much info. Pics are of a 12" long Lokar shifter - attached to a 700R4 transmission. I think 12" is perfect. 16" puts the knob about the middle of the speedo cluster. Sorry I don't have the seats in for reference. The 700R4 replaced a T5. The Lokar shifter ended up where the T5's was. IIRC had to do a little trimming of the tunnel cover, but not much. The shift indicator plate/boot is Lokar. The spacer/adapter is something I cobbled up out of wood and fiber glassed up - nothing off the shelf that I could find. I would probably not go with the indicator again. Would just make a plate out of 3/16" aluminum and bend to match the tunnel curve. You can buy just the boot for about 10 dollars. Much, much cheaper. I did this about 6 years ago, not sure if Lokar has changed their shifter in that time. Hope this helps?

Good Luck

Always...

Holy crap!!! That is beautiful!!

I installed a Lokar 8" on my 999. I love it, however it is NOWHERE near as pretty as the example, so I will tip my hat and quietly exit...stage left!!

I will post a pic if you still need it...

I would appreciate a picture of your shifter. I continue to be impressed with the quality of the work I see here. I am truly glad if my jeep runs.

I measured the distance up before I ordered my shifter, I looked at one with a 16 inch bar and honestly thought it looked terrible. I did remove my clutch pedal assy, and after I finished the swap, I thought about how cool it would have been to just rig a REALLY strong spring to the clutch pedal, then get the kit that allows you to press the entire knob to shift the Lokar, instead of just the middle!! I would have used the original 5sp shift knob and watched people struggle to get it in gear..Then of course jump in and show them how easy without revealing the trick....

May still do it just for fun!!!

Anyhow, here is the setup. I gotta admit, I am totally jealous of Always, but still proud as hell of my CJ!!!!

Very nice. I am leaning toward the 12" bar for the reach. I see you are in Las Cruces. I am in El Paso. Perhaps we can exchange ideas one day. I am always looking for like minded folk.

Appreciate the comments. Just shows what happens when common sense and money get thrown out the window. Truck633 - Your set up is clean and functional. I would have saved a lot of money and time had I not put the shift indicator light on. The old Lokar style shift indicator (like mine) is clunky and mounts to the side of the trans pan, a few inches from the exhaust. So had to cobble up a heat shield to protect the eleven billion wires from the damn thing. So far it's working OK, but if it goes out - it will not be replaced. Don't want to jinx anything, but do you remember where you got your boot?

The 12" length was a compromise. At the time I wanted to keep the "look" of the original manual shift, so I ordered a 16", and agree with you about the looks. And now after looking at yours, the shift throw would be shorter/quicker and it still looks good. I hate second guessing. Any problems with the reach?

thomasbruns1 - keep us posted on the outcome.

Good Luck

I like the gauge cluster in the dash.. I went radio free for years, then decided it would be nice to go ahead and install one.... Thus, omitting room to put my gauges like that!! I bought a SunPro trio and mounted it just under the dash. Had I gone any longer with the shifter, it probably would have hit. As it is, I love it! It looks like a reach for the driver, but really, when seated with a belt, you don't even have to lean forward to get it.

I was just looking at clutch pedal assemblies on Ebay.. I wish I hadn't sold mine!

ninja edit...

The boots are both Hurst shifter boots from local autozone... The floor plate was a piece of .120 diamond treadbrite bent to fit the floor hump and gnawed to accept the 300.....

Most definitely will keep you updated. I wish I had the patience to have a build thread, but I get into the mode and forget to take pictures. I will take pictures once I have completed my build and put them up here. I am quite proud of my progress, especially since I have completed all the work myself, with the exception of the Throttle Down Customs skid plate. That thing is an absolute beast. Worth every cent.
