My book only shows diagram, but 1984-1986 the wire is 16 VIO,W/TR. Which is (16 gage violet) Not sure what the W/Tr stands for, could be with white stripe. If you look under dash should see wire on gauge.
Look for sending unit on top of the driver's side of the head in the back right next to the valve cover. It's kinda small, only about 1/2 inch in diameter. I have a 304, so not real sure on location. Good luck.

It is an I6, not V6. may seem obvious but if you have a V6 it is not a 258ci, though typos abound.

I have a 1984 and it is at the front next to the top radiator hose. my 1981 has it at the back of the engine near the bulkhead on the manifold side.

My wiring diagram says Purple with tracer for the temp sending unit, solid purple for the oil pressure sender.

The oil pressure sender is low down behind the oil filter on the side of the block.

My 1981 has the 2 wires in the harness coming through the bulkhead connector and then splitting off, one passing over the top of the engine to the sender. However the 1984 has the temperature sender wire continuing in the harness further forwards.

The temperature sender is unmistakeable once you see it, it is not very tall, quite slim and is in a water passage. If in doubt look it up on Qadratech and then find a similair looking device on the top of the engine. It is usually on top as hot water rises.

in the states all CJ had the temp sensor mounted on the driver side rear of the head but al lot of cars had it mounted on the front. by the themostat housing. If the engine or head was replaced it could be up front like this:

Usually it's on the top rear of the head like this:
Here I am testing the sensor wire. The sender is right next to the tip of the probe.:

Found it. It was on top of the head way at the back of the engine near the valve cover...
Replaced it but gauge still climbs to Hot after 7 minn run time.. new cap, flushed & filled rad w/ new 50/50 coolant, new 195 deg thermostat ( Verified that it is working) new heater core, new hoses..new Rad a year ago, new water pump 2 years ago.. doesnt seem to be air in system
why is this happening??
